One story that broke on Twitter first: Plane crash in NY.

How? In Jan 2009, an onlooker witnessed a plane crash on the Hudson. Ahead of major news networks he tweeted: “I just watched a plane crash on the Hudson.”

Why do we care? Twitter has enabled people to see what life is like from around the world. From Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham tweeting from Afghanistan to Commander Chris Hadfield tweeting from space.

Go to your profile. Locate a tweet you would like to pin to the top (meaning that it doesn’t get lost in your feed despite time-lapse.)

Twitter 101 Control your privacy & security by clicking the settings & help button. In the drop down, click “settings.”

Twitter 101 Control your security like Login verification, as well as privacy like who can tag you in photos, see your tweets, etc.

Control your email notifications, like only receiving one email update per day OR getting updates every time something happens on your profile. (e.g.: mentions)

Control your web notifications on your profile, so that you’re either notified (or not) when people interact with you on Twitter.

Twitter 101 Who should I ?

Make lists of your personal interests, hobbies, people & work/career interests. Twitter will also prompt you with their recommendations of who you should follow based on your interests.

Interested in a certain topic or person? Perform a “Hashtag Search.” In the search box at the top of your twitter profile, type in the word you would like to search for. A list will populate for both people and tweets.

You will get a list like this. Use the “+Follow” button to follow people and companies that interest you. However, if you want to be more specific, you can use the Advanced Search function.

You can get as specific as you want & twitter will bring up as much relevant content as possible.

Twitter 101 In real-time, Twitter will let you know exactly who is interacting with you via the notifications section of the site.

By selecting “mentions” you can see who has used the “@” sign to engage with you. (e.g.: @HullCalgary has replied and retweeted.

Twitter 101 On the home page, you will see tweets from all the organizations and people you follow.

You can reply.

You can retweet.

You can favourite.

You can email, embed, mute the person/org.

Twitter 101 You will notice that once you start following many people/organizations that your home feed will become crowded & loud. That’s why “lists” become important (so you don’t miss the tweets and information you really want to know!)

STEP 2: You will be prompted to fill it out. Completely. Use hashtags & keywords. STEP 3: Search for

people/organizations.

INTERESTING FACT: Dec 2011 A false report declared that Bon Jovi was dead. He then tweeted a photo to show that he was still very much alive!
