Ever wondered what ‘making money online’ means?

How does it work?

What’s it all about?

Who can do it?

How do you get started?

How does it differ from traditional business?

Every business needs 3 basic things to succeed (offline or online) ◦ Customers (or traffic)

◦ A product or service that it sells

◦ Income generated from sales that exceeds costs

Simple, right?

The traditional business model

The simple 3 step process

1. Get people to walk in to your shop

2. Get them to buy your product

3. Make sure you make more money from

sales than you spend in outgoing costs

Traditional businesses just need to make people walk into the shop. And buy.

How do they do that? ◦ Location location location!!

A good position up the mall or on a busy street

The better the location, the higher the rent…..

◦ Advertising

Locally in the Yellow Pages, flyers etc

Online (Facebook, Instagram, Craig’s List etc)

The product must be good. Why? ◦ The business needs to get more money from sales

than it spends in costs

◦ If it doesn’t makes sales of its product, it can’t cover costs

◦ If it can’t cover costs, it starts to lose money

◦ If it starts to lose money, it can’t meet the payment of bills, wages, rent etc

◦ It fails

So the product must be guaranteed to sell

Starting a traditional business is expensive. Why? ◦ Rent for the building/showroom/premises it’s in

(the better the location the higher the rent) ◦ Interior design when it starts up to make it look

good

◦ Equipment for interior (machines/shelves etc)

◦ Stock and inventory of the product

◦ Utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet etc)

◦ Insurance (against theft, damages etc)

◦ Advertising (online and locally)

◦ Wages of staff

Simple – by ensuring the money coming in from sales is higher than the money going out for costs……

Seems simple, right?

Sell more of your product than you have to outlay for costs…….

Maybe not so simple……….

Let’s say your business sells clothes

Every month you have to pay ◦ Rent, Inventory (restocking), Utilities, Insurance

(X/12), Advertising, Wages

Then just sell more clothes than it costs for the above

How many shirts and pants do you need to sell to cover the above?

A LOT!!

The same 3 principles apply ◦ You need customers/traffic

◦ You need a product to sell

◦ Your sales income must exceed your costs

So how does it differ from traditional business?

In a HUGE, HUGE way.

You still need traffic/customers, but there’s a massive difference in your favor here

Unlike traditional businesses, you don’t have a ‘shopfront’. ◦ There’s no bricks and mortar up the mall

No need to try and attract ‘passers by’

It’s the internet – the whole world has access to you and your product

As long as someone has a computer/smartphone, they can access your product

Your URL, and your website, are your ‘shopfront’

Your job is to get the world to your website

Your product is on your website ◦ No website? No worries. Work with me and it’s

given to you

Unlike a traditional business, you don’t have the associated costs ◦ No building/office rent

◦ No interior design or decorating costs

◦ No stock/inventory costs

◦ No utilities bills (aside from your internet plan)

◦ No wages to pay

◦ No insurance to pay

You just pay for the initial product (at a fraction of the cost of opening up a ‘real shop’)

The same as traditional business

Make sure the money coming in from sales….

Is more than the money going out for costs

You just need to get eyes on your website

Attracting people to your website is simple

Just use all the online avenues out there ◦ Facebook

◦ YouTube

◦ Twitter

◦ Pinterest

◦ Instagram

◦ LinkedIn

◦ Blogging

◦ Craig’s List etc
