What is Patent?

A patent is an intellectual property right granted by the Government of the United States of America to an inventor for:excluding others from makingusing for some benefitoffering for saleor selling the invention

Patent TypesThere are three types of patents:

Utility patents: A type of patent that is granted on a discovery of any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof.

Patent Types

Design patents: A patent type that is granted to anyone who invents a new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture.

Patent Types

Plant patents: This patent type is very specific to the agricultural work where one invents or discovers and reproduces any distinct and new variety of plant.

How to file a patent?

Following steps need to be taken to file a patent:

1. Search the patent full-text and full-image to make sure nobody else had ever registered the idea.

2. Select patent type and decide if filed as an expedited or in one of the regular forms.

3. File it either by yourself or hire a lawyer.

4. Monitor application status and provide any additional information if requested.

5. Patent granted or rejected – if granted then pay fee to keep it active for 15-20 years.
