How NOT to Quit Your Job

So you are still working for “the man” but you are spending a lot of your time planning out your bigmove – a move into the vast world of entrepreneurship and franchise ownership, where possibilities areendless, and the sky is the limit. This is great! However, it is important to remember your success in thisworld is determined by the choices you make, and it is crucial to leave your employment on good terms. After all, burning bridges now could damage your chances of building those all-important businesscontacts. Here are some things to be sure to avoid when preparing to leave your current job.

Do not tell your boss off when quitting

We’ve all pictured it in our heads – telling a boss that we can’t stand to “take this job and shoveit”. However personally satisfying this may be, it is important to never actually go through withit. Especially if your franchise is one that your current place of work can benefit from, or vice versa.

Instead, what you should do is explain to your boss about why you are leaving. You never know, youand your former company could form a partnership down the road that could end up in your benefit.

Do not try and take co-workers with you

Attempting to steal co-workers from your current company will also burn bridges with them. Even ifthey are great workers, and you feel they would fit be a great fit in your new franchise, this can bedetrimental to a future partnership with your former place of work.

Alternatively, try asking these people for referrals of others they think would be a great fit for yourneeds. Plus, who is to say that once you are up and running they don’t come to you on their own for ajob? It is better if they come to you first.

Never work on your new business during office hours

Starting up your new franchise is always on your mind, and it should be. But do not be tempted intoactually working on getting your franchise up and running while at your current office. The last thingthat you want is to be fired before you are truly ready to quit.

If you are completely serious about going out on your own, you will make time after work and duringthe weekends to get things done. It may seem like a lot, but your hard work will pay off in the end.

Do not quit until you are truly ready to leave

Before you go to hand in that letter of resignation, make sure you have all your affairs in order. Do notjust dive into the deepend head first. Do you have enough saved to cover both personal andprofessional costs for the first year? Are you leaving at a time that will not affect the company tooharshly? Have you given the proper amount of notice?

These are all things to think about before it is time to go.

Be sure to follow these rules, so that you can leave your job on the best terms possible and start yourfranchising business off on the right foot.
