Nine beauty and fashion trends we should forget
aboutFrom the sock bun to the
corpse-like nude lip, here are nine beauty trends we can do
without in 2014.
Beauty trends may come and go, but they sure catch on quick. From the silly sock bun to unflattering makeup trends, we take a look at some of the recent fads we can do without in 2014.
Bleached eyebrows
First rocked by Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Vi$$er, bleached eyebrows managed to sneak their way onto almost every runway during fashion week
Soon after, Miley Cyrus “shocked” us again by taking the bleach brush to her brows
After realising she looked less “off the chain, ya’ll” and more like a salamander, Miley quickly reverted her brows back to their former glory
Men in makeup
Ladies fell over themselves at the sight of Jared Leto’s angsty guyliner. While it shouldn’t have looked hot, it did.
My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way soon joined the guyliner brigade followed by Adam Lambert, Pete Wentz and everyone’s favourite scruff-ball, Russell Brand.
Regardless of whether or not we fawned over these dark souls at one point, it’s 2014 and makeup for men should have expired by now.
Chalked hair
This time last year, Pinterest boards all over the world exploded with images of ethereal models with tie-died tips and carefully chalked curls.
Don’t get me wrong – it looks pretty, really pretty. It also happens to be the undertaking of the century that involves bleach, ridiculously-priced hair chalk and way too many (conflicting) DIY YouTube videos.
This trend has run its course.
Sock buns
Where do I start – they’re bulky, bulbous and block out the sun.
They are the worst thing to happen to socks since they grew toes.
Girls who wear sky-high sock buns to concerts should have their own section – at the back.
Gel nails
While gel nails are arguably one of the most convenient ways to maintain your manicure, are you willing to sacrifice your health for unchipped tips?
More and more regular gel users are contracting skin cancer from the frequent exposure to the UV rays which are used to dry the gel polish.
Too-nude lips
Nude nails are classic and elegant, nude heels make my heart swell and when executed well, nude lips are a great way to complement a smokey eye.
This is not about those nude lips. This is about nude lips that cross the line between catwalk and the walking dead.
Do not – I repeat – do not wear lip colour that is significantly lighter than your skin colour.
The Peplum silhouette
Peplum fashion should come with the following warning:
1. It won’t make you look thin
2. Men don’t find it attractive
3. Peplum is prone to getting crushed and creased on public transport
Denim diapers
Making guest appearances at summer music festivals the world over, denim short-shorts are a fashion epidemic that just won’t quit.
Apart from exposing way more cheek than most are comfortable with, these glorified denim diapers suit about 1% of the population.
Please. Just. Stop. Thank goodness winter is on its way!
Cosmetics containing squalene
Each year, thousands of endangered deep sea sharks are killed to supply a cheap source of squalene – a natural oil stored mainly in the shark’s liver.
This compound is a natural moisturiser and has since been sourced by multiple cosmetics companies as a hydrating agent.
Since when is soft cuticles worth culling endangered sharks?
