FIRST, WHAT IS AN EXOPLANET?

An exoplanet is a planet that is located out of the Solar system. Normally we can only detect the exoplantes that are inside our Galaxy, so we know almost nothing about planets in other galaxies. But even inside the Milky Way, the distances are amazing.

So how do we detect and analyse them?

METHODS OF OBSERVATION

Astrometry

This method is for calculating the distance to stars, and one of the most accurate.

Page 7: Presentación final.pptx

METHODS OF OBSERVATION

Radial velocityDoppler effect. The radial-velocity method measures these variations in order to confirm the presence of the planet.

METHODS OF OBSERVATION

Transit fotometry

If a planet crosses (transits) in front of its parent star's disk, then the observed visual brightness of the star drops a small amount.

METHODS OF OBSERVATION

Gravitational lensing

G,T & M are in the same ecuation

HOW DO WE LOOK FOR EXTRATERRESTIAL LIFE?

DIRECT RESEARCH Solar System

INDIRECT RESEARCH ExoplanetsARTIFICIAL MESSAGES

DIRECT RESEARCH

THE CANDIDATES FOR THIS EXPLORATION ARE MARS, EUROPA(JUPITER’S MOON), ENCELADES(SATRUN’S MOON) AND METEORITES.

INDIRECT RESEARCH

NASA’S TERRESTRIAL PLANET FINDER IS AN EXAMPLE OF THESE NEW TELESCOPES.

TEMPERATURE AND COMPOSTITON OF THE ATMOSPHERE ARE SOME THE THINGS WE CAN DETECT.•

THIS METHOD ALLOWS US TO LOOK FOR PRIMITIVE ORGANISMS

THE PRESENCE OF OXYGEN IS AN EXAMPLE OF A “MARK” LEFT IN THE ATMOSPHERE BY LIFE

EARTH “2.0”

• Name: Kepler-186f

• Distance: 500 Light-Years

• Orbits the red star “Kepler-186”

The candidates

Why?

• They are solid

• They have some kind of atmosphere

• They are in the habitable area of their star systems
