Faust Vrančić (1551. – 1617.) Faust Vrančić from Šibenik is a unique

person in the Croatian technique. His greatest work Machinae novae was

published in Venice in 1595. One of the most revolutionary constructions

described in that book, which should certainly be pointed out, was the mill working by the power of wash and tide, really praiseworthy idea. His construction of a parachute, called Homo volans, was completely adequate for the man.

Apart from this book, Vrančić was also famous for creating technical terminology in Croatian language

Marin Getaldić (1568. – 1626.)

He was Croatian mathematician and physicist.

With his work Some ideas about parable and Promoted Archimedes.

he proved for the first time that all forms of parables are suitable for construction of parable mirrors.

Ruđer Bošković (1711. – 1787.) He was one of the greatest Croatian

scientists of all times. He was philosopher, mathematician,

physicist and technician. His masterpiece The theory of

natural philosophy (1758), relationship in nature, which is, as he said himself “based on the law of forces, the only one existing in nature”.

Ferdinand Kovačević (1838. – 1913.) In 1869 he was appointed

vice-president of the The Telegraphic Inspector’s Office Of Croatia and Slavonia in Zagreb

He invented duplex connection which was recognized by The Inovation Office in Vienna in 1892

David Schwartz (1850. – 1897.) inventor of the metal stearable air

balloon or the first zeppelin. he wanted to make stearable aircraft. first inventor who put gasoline engine

into his prototype. he went to Germany, where together

with the factory owner Karl Berg, he found new aluminum alloy called dural (the Schwartz aluminum).

While he was expected to arrive in Berlin, he died in Vienna

His wife sold his invent to Count Zeppelin whose social position contributed that Schwartzplane was recorded in history of inventions as zeppelin

Nikola Tesla (1856. – 1943.) great inventor who worked in the field of electro

technique. His first great invention was the discovery of the

rotating magnetic field. In the year 1884 he worked in Edison’s laboratory He wanted to apply his system of alternating

current (contrary to Edison’s direct current), so he started his own career.

He founded his own laboratory to develop machines of alternating current (which were invented by Tesla himself).

He licensed his invention of system production, transfer and usage of alternating current, system which is used even nowadays.

The American factory owner Westinghouse bought Tesla’s inventions and built the great power plant on the Niagara Falls.

His final aim was wireless transfer of energy, which was also the only idea that he didn’t succeed to realize.

In 1889 he constructed his first high-frequency generators, producing very high voltage in that way.

Andrija Mohorovičić (1857. – 1936.) prominent scientist in the field of seismology,

meteorology and climatology. he reached worldly important discovery. He realized that 54 km deep in the earth

seismic waves suddenly change the speed of spreading.

In that way he discovered the discontinuity line, the border between upper layer of the Earth and the thicker one below.

This discontinuity was called the Mohorovičić’s discontinuity to his honour or the moho layer, expression about the speed change the Mohorovičić’s law

One of the craters on the invisible side of the Moon was also called after him.

Slavoljub Penkala (1871. – 1922.) expert in chemistry and inventor. we will mention few worldly famous

his inventions : ball-pointed pen, fountain pen, pen-holder, rotating tooth brush, wood protective liquid Krepax

He made a sketch for construction of glider hovercraft as well as of helicopter forty five years before the Englishman Cockerel.

top of his work was the construction of the first airplane in Croatia in 1910.
