PROBIOTICS IN SHRIMP AQUACULTURE :

Shrimp aquaculture, as well as other industries, constantly requires new techniques in order to increase production yield. Modern technologies and other sciences such as biotechnology and microbiology are important tools that could lead to a higher quality and greater quantity of products.

Feeding and new practices in farming usually play an important role in aquaculture, and the addition of various additives to a balanced feed formula to achieve better growth is a common practice of many fish and shrimp feed manufacturers and farmers. Probiotics, as 'bio-friendly agents' such as lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus spp., can be introduced into the culture environment to control and compete with pathogenic bacteria as well as to promote the growth of the cultured organisms.

In addition, probiotics are nonpathogenic and nontoxic microorganisms without undesirable side-effects when administered to aquatic organisms. These strains of bacteria have many other positive effects, which are described in this article

AQUACULTURE :

Aquaculture has been defined by the Japanese Resource Council, Science and Technology Agency as under:

“Aquaculture is an industrial process of raising aquatic organisms upto final commercial production within properly partitioned aquatic areas, controlling the environmental factors and administering the life history of the organism positively and it has to be considered as an independent industry from the fisheries hitherto.”

Objectives of  Aquaculture :

Having defined aquaculture and mentioned some of the reasons which have contributed to imparting a fillip to aquaculture in recent times, it is proper to state the objectives of aquaculture. These are:

i. Production of protein rich, nutritive, palatable and easily digestible human food benefiting the whole society through plentiful food supplies at low or reasonable cost.

ii. Providing new species and strengthening stocks of existing fish in natural and man-made water-bodies through artificial recruitment and transplantation.

iii. Production of sportfish and support to recreational fishing.

iv. Production of bait-fish for commercial and sport fishery.

v. Production of ornamental fish for aesthetic appeal.

vi. Recycling of organic waste of human and livestock origin.

vii. Land and aquatic resource utilization: this constitutes the macro-economic point of view benefiting the whole society. It involves (a) maximum resource allocation to aquaculture and its optimal utilization; (b) increasing standard of living by maximizing profitability; and (c) creation of production surplus for export (earning foreign exchange especially important to most developing countries).

ix. Providing means of sustenance and earning livelihood and monetary profit through commercial and industrial aquaculture. This constitutes the micro-economic point of view benefiting the producer. In the case of small-scale producer, the objective is to maximise income by greatest possible difference between income and production cost and, in the case of large scale producer, by maximising return on investment.

x. Production of industrial fish.

BIOCLEAN – Eco Balancer / Control Ammonia

It is a formulation of beneficial pond bacteria, which has been used in aquaculture ponds. They function well in fresh, brackish or salt water. The beneficial microbes in BioClean have been selected for their ability to biodegrade complex organic compounds like proteins, fats, oils, cellulose and starch.

These heterotrophic bacteria are generally considered to be organic sludge degraders. They are mostly from the genera Bacillus and are facultative anaerobes, meaning they can function with or without oxygen.

Each gram of BioClean contains more than three billions of bacteria belong to different species and strains. They carry out the hydrolysis of the complex organic molecules continuously and keep the pond water free from sludge accumulation and ammonia toxicity.

Therefore, it is imperative to maintain the C:N:P ratio, mechanical aeration, Heterotrophs in BioClean use organic carbon for cell tissue formation.

As a result, the rate of nitrification is controlled by oxidation of CBOD during the carbon cycle. As long as there is a high organic loading (CBOD) to the system, the bacteria will dominate and reduce the nitrogenous components from the pond water.

Farmers in real term have seen lot of benefits during the culture with minimal dose, especially reduction in algal froth spreads to the whole pond and in the corner, reducing the occurrence and stress in shrimp due to dinoflagellate, very effective in reducing brown and black gill. Remove the flavor and assist better texture in shrimp. Reduce the bad odor in water. Reduce the Mortality of Ammonia and nitrite shocks during the culture.

ECOBIO – Sludge Digester

It is a multipurpose biological product for treatment of heavy organic sludge in pond soil and odor control.

It is a highly concentrated product that contains a mix of dynamic and synergistic bacteria and powerful enzymes for biodegrading organic wastes.

The targets include shrimp ponds after harvesting, wastewater treatment plants and shrimp/prawn packing facilities, lagoons, ponds and canals and elimination of malodors from habitat.

Promote faster degradation of organic materials such as protein, lipid, carbohydrate, cellulose, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, hydrogen sulfide and phosphate. Reduce BOD, COD and TSS. Aid in settling and decreasing turbidity. Decrease nutrient levels, improves dissolved oxygen and balances algae growth.

ECOBIO play a major role in reducing the (TOM) total organic matter which has very high CFU (colony forming unit). It may take 3 weeks or more to prepare the ponds after harvesting and Using EB there is no need for drying, mechanical collection and removal of the sludge. Significant savings on labor and faster startup of the next cycle. During pond preparation, once the water is treated or settled.

Start using 500gm EB one or two dose till the TOM level comes down less than 1%. EB can be applied from 50 cm average pond water level if the pond is not treated with Chlorination.

Keep the pond for 4-5 days with aeration for the metabolic activity takes place.

The TOM levels come down and the pond will ready for stocking as a new one.

Care should be taken during the grow out period as the product is very high in metabolic activity and it needs optimum oxygen level, need proper management.

It will remove high level of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, nitrites and nitrate level.

Excessive frothing will come down drastically within 48 hours and helps in reducing the brown gill.

High level of Ammonia is controlled within a short time.

FAQs

1. What is Biosecurity?

Is a series of management practices to reduce the prevention of Infectious agents onto a shrimp farm.Essential aspect in food safety programs.Keeping food products wholesome in highest quality important for the health and benefits the consumers.Ensure consumer demand for the product. Profitability of Aquaculture enterprises. Shrimps are healthier and more productive, Benefits farming community profitability and better Environment.Vinnbio India Pvt ltd since 2012, is the Indian subsidiary of V-innovations Inc in Texas founded by Mr Venantius Anthony who has been in the aqua culture business for more than 25 years.

2. Role of Probiotics in shrimp farming

Pro: favour, Bios: life. An antonym of antibiotic, probiotics involves in multiplying few good/useful microbes to compete with the harmful ones, thus suppressing their growth. A probiotic is a cultured product or live microbial feed supplement, which beneficially affects the host by improving its intestinal (microbial) balance. They are generally heterotrophic and feed on the organic digested sludge thus lowering the organic load of the pond ecosystem and improving the clarity of water. They produce enzymes which digests the waste matter and releases the free nitrogen thus helping in the removal of the toxic nitrates, nitrites, H2S and ammonia from the water. Probiotics produce antimicrobial compounds which inhibit pathogens from growing in pond water and prevent diseases. The microorganisms also grow in the shrimp gut and prevent pathogens growing in the same gastrointestinal region. Use of probiotics is assures a healthy shrimp and sustainable farm. Probiotics can be used in all areas of shrimp farming from hatchery, raceways, grow out ponds, pond preparation after harvest and treatment of discharge water holding tanks and reservoirs.

3. Algae bloom? Why you should prevent it?

Algae blooms are the uncontrolled growth of one or more species of algae, which may result from excessive nutrient loading in combination with adequate light, temperature, and other environmental factors. The production of algal toxins is normally associated with algal blooms, or the rapid growth and exceptionally dense accumulation of algae. The term Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) is used to describe a proliferation of algae, or phytoplankton. Severe blooms of even non-toxic algae can spell disaster for cultured animals, because blooms deplete the oxygen in the shallow waters of many aquaculture systems. The number of HABs aroundThe effects of algal blooms vary widely. Some algae are toxic only at very high densities, while others can be toxic at very low densities (a few cells per liter). Some blooms discolor the water (thus the terms "red tide" and "brown tide"), while others are almost undetectable with casual observation.

FAQs

4. Biofloc technology and its benefits ?

Biofloc is a unique ecosystem of rich and potent suspended particles which are conglomerates of microbes, algae, protozoa and others with detritus. They are light, normally suspended in water with a size of 0.1- 0.4 mm. Biofloc is a rich source of high quality protein from bacteria and others known as single cell protein (SCP ).

Biofloc Technology Systems (BFT): Benefits

BFT helps in solving culture water and feed problems. When carbon is added, nitrogen compounds combine with it to produce flocs of protein molecules. These molecules form a floating mass called bioflocs which are dominated by bacteria. The production of microbial biomass, are used by the culture species as additional high protein source. The bacteria take up ammonium from the water to produce microbial protein. BFT removes ammonia-nitrogen from the water. BFT creates additional feed for the shrimp thus reducing feed inputs but increasing production due to higher rate of stocking.

5. How to stop algae bloom proactively?

Excess of nitrogen and phosphorus in pond water attract algae leading to bloom. The first step is to reduce organic bottom sludge < 4.0 % during pond preparation. The organic sludge is rich in nitrogenous compounds from fecal matter and excess feeds from the previous grow out cycle. Conventional method of drying out the top soil and removing top layers is not reliable. Therefore, it is recommended to bio secure the pond with probiotics during pond preparation and water culture. The microbes and enzymes in the probiotics digest the organic wastes and eliminate excess of nitrogen from pond. This will reduce the population of undesirable microorganisms and transform your pond into healthy ecosystem. Measure the concentration of NH3, NO2, NO3 to ensure safe levels. Top up the pond water level and introduce healthy PL shrimps.During the growout cycle care must be taken not to give excess supplementary feed which will increase the bottom sludge and nitrogen level to attract and promote algal bloom. Another important step is to maintain a C:N ratio in the range of 20: 1. This means that addition of carbon source (molasses, HFCS, dextrose, bananas, rice bran etc.) is in the right direction with mechanical aeration to actively promote heterotrophic bacterial population to utilize all the nitrogen and deplete it. Low nitrogen in pond water means less algal density. This is important when high protein feed is supplemented and also when the protein is nutritionallyof poor quality (poor digestibility &absorption by shrimp population)this leads to less growth and wastage of feed. It is significant to monitor the sacchi disc number and turbidity routinely along with NH3 and NO2 concentration. Another way to monitor optimum feeding efficiency is to check the FCR regularly and prevent wastes. Excess feed and wasted feed are prelude to algae bloom and with severe economic consequences.
