As you may or may not know, Glassdoor is the fast growing jobs and recruitment site, currently taking the US by storm and quickly making its way through our UK recruitment market.

But what exactly does Glassdoor do? Well, prepare to be amazed and maybe even a little scared…

Glassdoor allows you to not only “sell” your company and all of its wonderful attributes to potential employees, but also advertise your vacancies and allow former and current employees to write reviews.

Let me guess, alarm bells are currently ringing in your ears? If so, run away from them because this is positively revolutionary! We shouldn’t be frightened about what employees will write about us as employers, but rather embrace the feedback to help create a working environment that naturally promotes positive reviews. But how?

Ask yourself these two simple questions and find out…1. Do you have a tendency to bury your head when it comes to potential

problems?2. Have you ever decided not to buy something because of someone

else’s negative experience?

If you answered no to these questions then you’re already on the right track to embracing your employee reviews. Here are a few steps to remember:

#1. Always reply to a review, even if it is an old one.

Ignoring old reviews will suggest to potential employees that you aren’t bothered about former staff members and their experiences.

#2. Never respond to a negative review with an argumentAnd certainly not by trying to belittle that person - If they have written something negative then it’s because they had that negative experience. Instead, see if you can rectify the situation and in turn you’ll have the opportunity to show that you aren’t that bad after all and that you do very much care about the employee experience.

#3. Don’t force current employees to write a good reviewMost often than not if your Glassdoor page is full of positive, eager-eyed employees with nothing bad to say about your company, then potential employees will probably be in disbelief and run a mile in the opposite direction. Reviews should be honest, which means accepting not everything is always perfect. (PS – There’s nothing wrong with asking employees to leave an honest review once they’ve finished their probation or during their exit interview).
