OBJECTIVES: To produce evidence on the economics of water security in support of a Goal on Water within the post-2015 development agenda.To bring stakeholders´ voices from country level into the global debate.To generate high level political support for the Global Water Goal.

The GWP-OECD Global Dialogue on Water Security and Sustainable Growth was launched at Stockholm World Water Week on 2 September 2013

National Stakeholder Consultations on Water – Phase I: Jan to April 2013

Facilitated by GWP in 22 countries: •Discussed challenges and priorities post-2015•Countries want targets specific to their own situation - a common thread was about implementing water resources management following an integrated approach•Issues raised informed the development of the UN-Water Recommendations•Stakeholder report was presented to the OWG for their meeting of 24 May 2013•Brought the voice of the stakeholders into the UN process.•Supported by UNDP, UN ECE, SDC and EUWI-AWG

The Country Consultations presented the UN-Water recommendations to key stakeholders at country level.

They covered 29 countries, some the same as phase I to get follow up and some new countries to extend the outreach.

The consultations promoted and provided feedback on the proposed Water Goal and targets, including informing senior officials and New York country missions involved in the SDG negotiations.

The country consultations form part of the GWP-OECD Global Dialogue on Water Security and Sustainable Growth.

OUTCOMES :

Broad consensus that a dedicated water goal is fundamental within the post-2015 development agenda

Strong support for comprehensive and inter-related targets that advance integrated approaches to water management

Clear preference for a “dashboard” with flexibility for setting national targets, with definitions for terms and indicators

Need for an innovative and comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system to measure progress

Visible Findings

• Individual country reports provided to mission representatives in New York as input to SDG discussions

• Synthesis report injected into the UN-Water SDG Working Group and the OWG directly

Six thematic debates convened by the President of the General Assembly in 2014: 18-19 February 2014 : 1.Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Energy(GWP ES moderated Panel 1 on Water and Sanitation)

6-7 March 2014 :2. Contributions of women, the young and civil society(GWP Chair participated)

9-10 April 2014 :3. Role of partnerships (GWP Chair participated)

Post-2015 SDG Process

-Open Working Group has 17 Areas of Focus - Water is one of them

-September2014: High Level Stocktaking event

-November 2014: Synthesis report on the MDGs

-2015 as the International Year of Water and Development, GWP invited to be one of the lead agencies with UNDP, UNEP

-Intergovernmental Negotiations until September 2015 on the proposed new post-2015 development framework
