KERALA – THE UNDEREXPLOITED MINE

60 years has gone, ever since the state of Kerala was born. The linguistic based

division of the country has both happiness and sorrows for the state. But after these

many years of existence, our country has achieved significant landmarks. India is

on its preparation to become the next world super power.

But there are some relevant questions to be asked.

Did the outstanding growth that the country witnessed have reflected in all

the parts?

Has it been reflected from the State of Kerala?

Where do we stand now in the journey to be the nation’s forerunners?

Well, its an extensive topic to have debates and discussions on

Many of the latest surveys and studies reports that Kerala ranks No 1,No 2, No 3

etc in HDI (Human Development Index), Infant mortality rate, No of Comfort

stations and Toilets, Individual life span etc. Just as these stats represent these are

quite visible as well. But didn’t we feel something missing from the list? In fact

some measurable quantities we would always look with anxiety? Yes It is. It is

very unfortunate that our state is behind by a very large margin in many

developmental aspects like Infrastructure, Transportation means, Industrialization,

Export etc. It is quite obvious to watch our neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and

Karnataka fly high and our fellow Keraliates watch them and come back only to

curse and blame ourself. The burst in technological advancement these states and

many other states in the country generated over the last few years is so high that

our state is never expected to catch them up in any near future.

It is no more that time for us to set back cursing the limitations. We need to foresee

a large future and make plans for it. Just like many big cities and civilizations came

up each individual need to be contributor towards the overall development of the

state and take credit. Ideas innovations and guts need to come in a greater quantity

to pre register for entering the elite group of future World destinations.



The word Fastness in the growth of a state brings about a very wide definition. It

represents the fastness in getting a sanctioned decision to getting the job done

fully. Fastness is required in all the matter of affairs of the governing body. Quick

decision making is always taken as a better start for any activity. As far as the state

is concerned there is a serious missing of the word fastness in many sections.

Especially road and transportation infrastructure. Don’t get miss leaded as the state

is having a fair transportation network that could serve for the needs of the current

generation. However not enough for future.

The topography of Kerala is such that the entire state could be taken as a single

urban agglomeration. With only very small differences between the cities and

towns, one Master plan would be enough to address the issues of the entire state.

Projects like Metros, Monorails, widening of roads, expressways etc are the things

which should had come in place atleast 10 years before. Plans for many bypasses,

flyovers and underpasses came so late into discussion that the regions already

crossed the saturation limit. However the efficiency and expenses of these now will

be questioned as these projects should had seen light a decade before with more

future vision. Now instead of these regions based projects more mass transit

projects should come up. The suburban railway project that the state considered in

the model of Mumbai suburban system is one such. With rich water resources

inland waterways could be a cheap alternative for passengers as well as goods

logistics.

Fastness however is not something

restricted to transportation and

infrastructure growth. As I mentioned

before decision making is one unique

section that require large mass of

prerequisite preparation. Thus a new

investor planning to double his earnings in

a social prosperous manner should be

handled with utmost care. Remember the

smart city project of Dubai business

tycoon group. It’s a known fact that

anywhere else in the world would have

seen the project already completed and started deriving benefits out of it. It is of

national shame that the changing government and legislation systems dragged the

project so late that it has hardly finished the first phase after almost 12 years from

the date of proposal.

The Kochi metro also holds another such tale. The

dream projects like Kochi metro, Vizhinjam port

and Kannur airport all need to be finished on time

to earn back the lost trust in the mind of people as

well as to earn recognition on a global scale.

Currently the government is working on monorail

projects in Trivandrum and Calicut should be

started immediately. With timely compensation

payment more land acquisition processes should

not be dragged and immediately the road

widening processes and suburban rail projects

should be started.



Though there are criticism on Kerala’s industrial growth there is wide appreciation

on the growth of IT. Kerala is one among the first state in the country to bring on

digitalization and IT revolution in the state. The Technopark Trivandrum and

Infopark Kochi are one of the largest IT park in the country itself. Contributing

significantly to the country’s IT growth. Kerala give employment to more than

10000 employees in the IT sector. The smartcity project at Kochi is expected to

further increase the strength of IT export from Kerala. The incubators at Infopark

is considered as the best for startups in entire Asia.

It is of no wonder that a state with 100% literacy aiming towards great literacy

rates in computer knowledge. Though the left Democratic Front had been quite

hesitant towards replacement of computer in the offices, in the latter part of the

decade they too came with large no of IT projects including Starting IT parks in

every district. By 2010 almost all the government offices changed their platforms

to the modern technology. The Akshaya centres, state run firm for free computer

education and training to the masses had contributed lot towards the achievement

of computer literacy in the state

In IT sector Kerala can be called as a self motiavated entity. however with the likes

of more competitive IT triad of Banglore-Pune-Hyderabad and further threats of

Ahmedabad and Chennai Lobbies, there has to be distinctive strategy that the state

should form. The internet infrastructure need to be more strong with more hotspots

and highspeed internet connections made possible. To attract more number of

foreign companies, the state policies should be liberalized more and make more

investor friendly.

The education sector of Kerala is also modernized

highly with more number of smart classes being

installed. The state should start thinking about the next

generation concepts immediately to stand distinct. So

far no part of the country has witnessed Robotics and

automatics significantly. Thus it might be good sector

where the state could focus on. Not only it will increase

the speed of activities getting done with precision but

more kiosks and robots to serve the common men in

public will be a great scene.

Another prominent sector in Kerala which need to

become more smarter is the Tourism. Globally Kerala

is a known tourist hub. With more service being offered

to the tourist the yearly growth will only project an upward trend. Government

controlled services synchronizing with internet facilities will protect them from

being miss leaded and exploited and make activities convenient for both the tourist

as well as the locals and government.

Digital information display boards and smart phone based services, more hotspots

will make the experience a lot more better. Some times we shouldn’t mind

replacing tradition or heredity with new and better if they could make things more

easier.

Clean Kerala Kerala has presumably attained a clean

state image over the years and there are

some serious truth in it. Having a large

group of highly educated and health

conscious population, Keralaite’s

maintain great concern over health and

cleanliness. Thus resulting more cleaner

households. But the irony is that nothing

can actually justify Keralaite’s public

cleanliness. The large heap of market

waste and impure river water and dusty

and plastic filled streets are contrary to the

cleanliness of the Keraliate’s.

Its immature to see that people keep their

own house and workplace premises clean

but wont mind to make others dirty. The

heap of wastes been deposited in the road

side corners and isolated localities are

factories to large number of airborne and

water borne diseases. The running water

streams side to the roads and biogas plants

are installed with great enthusiasm.

However it is seen that these enthusiasm

will be soon lost and especially once if

they get damaged they are gone and lost

forever. In this regard we have got enough

to blame the panchayath municipality

corporation and all levels of local

governing bodies.

Modern equipments which could Serveve

multi purpose are there. Which could be

used as a possible Alternative in the

collection Processing and disposal of wastes.

Kerala being a major tourist destination has to severely check on these aspects. Its

quite understanding that a tourist would possibly prefer less to go to a place that’s

untidy. The state actually outscores many neighbors in this regard. The mass

campaigning of PM Narendra Modi had been a great initiative. But its very

unfortunate that such a useful project didn’t see much of the light and carried

through later on. New innovative technologies are available and land conjestion for

disposal cannot be considered as a limitation anymore. Investments need to be

done in importing and installing these modern mechanisms and derive the best out

of it. Over all the attitude of the people is what that need to change the most.

The fastness smartness and cleaness never come

cheap. Before investing and Installing huge money

projects it need to be primarly investigated. Land

acquisition problems for development are primarily

due to people are not properly addressed, Plus excessive lobbying by the

opposition groups against the ruling group .It could be seen as a result of people

not ready to accept your philosophy of the “development for them” plus this

lobbying. So there has to be campaigns to eradicate this faithlessness from the

mind of citizens and need to put the first installment as trust in their mind. Once

people start recognizing your actions as useful and loyal to them, they will

voluntarily come forward to support it.

The most challenging aspect of the Keraliate community is also this unacceptance.

Its worthy to mention that they are highly

welcome minded if they go abroad and out of

state. But in the state its very hard to earn

their trust to support. It could be said as a

failure of the governments that ruled the state

for many years. Its high time to restore the

lost trust in their mind. They would probably

take a new project as a matter of ineterst of

some corporate or political party and wont

believe things in the first shots. Especially

when used the particular phrase “FOR

YOU”. The perspectives and

misconceptions about proper maintenance

and timely completion as well as effective

management all need to be addressed and

convinced at prior to earn the trust of the

otherwise open minded community

Penetrating into the mind of

the people is the most difficult

task in any field. So to

penetrate and leave a mark in

their mind in highly educated

and backward moving Kerala

community would require

large amount of canvassing

and explanations with solid

proof.

Invest trust on your citizens

has been used as a moto to

endrose the feeling of

motivation and security

among the citizens in many

foreign countries.
