Intense competition is developing between the mega hubs of Turkey, the Arabian Gulf and Eastern Europe. The region is at an undeniable crossroad and the airports are in a keen contest to establish themselves as the dominant transfer hub. In Turkey, the third Istanbul airport is currently under construction and is set to be the largest in the World in terms of passenger capacity. Once fully complete by 2018, the giant 150 million passenger capacity air terminal will underscore Istanbul’s growing reputation as a global air travel hub. The Middle East is undertaking major investments, as the World-changing operations of its main airlines continue to expand rapidly. Saudi Arabia and Oman are embarked on major expansions. Dubai World Central is a continuing project establishing the World’s biggest airport by 2027. Hamad International Airport in Doha is scheduled to open in 2017. Other projects in the region include Jeddah King Abdulaziz International and King Khaled. In Eastern Europe projects have been launched in Russia (Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo), and in Zagreb; In Turkey, in Izmir; In West Europe: at the Crete Kasteli Airport, and at Heathrow, Gatwick, Frankfurt and Zurich Airports. At Noppen`s 3 rd Annual Airport Development & Expansion Summit, Istanbul will once again welcome the international experts. Airport authorities, operators, civil aviation executives, government officials and construction companies will go in discussion with consultants, architects, equipment providers and service groups, exploring the market and supporting project development.
