Typical conventions of a Magazine
Masthead:The masthead is a title block for the magazine.Distinct & eye-catching.
Pugs:Top left and right hand corners. Prices & logos are often placed here. Sometimes the top of the page is cornered off with a triangle.
Secondary Lead:A sneak preview of an inside article. Usually a photo.
Splash:Main story- with photo & headline.
Stand first:The sentence after a headline that sells an article to a reader.
Strap line:Sub-heading below the main headline.
Tag:Phrase or word to attract and grab the readers attention (sensational, wow!, etc)
By line:Name of the reported
Kicker:Article with different layout and probably different font- meant to be a main story which stands out.
Puffs:Exclusive, usually celebrity gossip which entices the reader.
Other “School” based Magazines
This is an example of a School based magazine.
Here we see that the editors of this magazine have chosen to have a fun and enthusiastic photograph as their main photo- This promotes a happy school which is what you would want your school to be advertised as.
The layout is simple yet effective as the main focus is on the photograph and the article.
The photographs of the pupils were taken individually and then merged together to create one photo which is a creative idea and gives the impression of a ‘high school musical’ theme which was the school production they performed.
The colour theme works effectively as the masthead and the bar at the bottom which reads “Young entrepreneurs Sport Art Global links Ofsted success” are matching in blue tones.
