Rural Internet KiosksThe Rural Internet Kiosk project was developed by Jitu Patani, who has a vision of bridging the digital divide by providing the last mile access to rural or remote communities. As well, we seek to ensure that marginalized citizens such as women and youth also have access to technology that will ensure their active participation in society at large. We are helping Africa move towards the Millennium Development Goal of Bridging the Digital Divide by year 2015.

Using virtualization technology which allows for up to 10 users to share one PC, RIK is working with leading edge technology that promotes our sustainable computing approach. By eliminating 90% of potential end of life E-waste, we are not focusing on donated or dumped outdated computer equipment.

Though by using Linux based solutions, it allows for the efficent use of computer resources, and can extend the lifespan of a PC. RIK will be offering 2 Userful solutions;

Userful Desktop: A locked down secure solution for Public Access Computing

Userful Multiplier: Offers multiple stations running Ubuntu and can be loaded with free opensource programs based on your orgnaizations requirements.Ms. Crystal Kigoni, Voices of Africa

Question Box Question Box is Open Mind's initiative that helps people find answers to everyday questions like health, agriculture, business, education and entertainment. It provides easy access to information in hard-to-reach areas and breaks through technology, language and literacy barriers. We do this through:

Live telephone hotlines connected to live operators• SMS (Text Messaging)• Mobile and solar technologies that operate off the

grid• Open Question - a simple software to start your own

EVOKEEVOKE, a new online game, is a ten-week crash course in changing the world. The goal is to help empower people all over the world, especially young people in Africa, to come up with creative solutions to urgent social problems.

EVOKE is free to play and open to anyone, anywhere. Players will gain 21st century skills needed to become social innovators who shape the future.

The 'text book' for EVOKE is an online graphic novel. Set in the year 2020, the novel follows the efforts of a mysterious network of Africa’s best problem-solvers.

Each week, as players unravel the mystery of the EVOKE network, they will form their own innovation networks: brainstorming creative solutions to real-world development challenges, learning more about what it takes to be a successful social innovator, and finding ways to make a difference in the world.

Aide Data Mapping AidData attempts to capture the universe of development finance, increase the value of data by providing more descriptive information about development activities, provide data in an accessible format, and strengthen efforts to improve donor and recipient strategic planning and coordination.

The AidData team is building an easy-to-use, comprehensive, and timely resource describing the universe of development finance project-by-project, including all grants and loans committed by all major bilateral and multilateral aid donors. Current data on development finance lacks timeliness, depth, and comprehensiveness. Better data will help increase aid targeting and coordination, and it will enable better measurement and evaluation of aid effectiveness.

AidData is currently developing a publicly-accessible interface that will enable researchers, field workers, and policy makers interested in development finance to access detailed project level data in order to increase transparency, accountability, and effectiveness.

LESSONS LEARNED

• Why Innovations?: innovations aide in improving governance, showcase of constructive citizen engagement

• for sustainability and scalability: partner with government, partner with business (be social entrepreneurs), make the people own your innovations –If they have need and used for it, they are willing to pay for these services.

LESSONS LEARNED

• Technology as tool not end: Use technology that the community is familiar (innovations is about improving service delivery and not capacity building for the use of technology)

• Collaboration: Solutions to every problem has been solve somewhere else in the world – working together we can put forward these solutions as a menu that would suit the appetite of every problem and situation that needs to be addressed.
