Pico at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

Activate Sochi 2014 4 / 5

As a result of our success in providing temporary infrastructure for the Winter Olympics

test events in 2013, Pico won the contract to provide temporary infrastructure at all

competition venues for the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter

Games from the Sochi Olympic Organising Committee. The newly-built 2014 Olympic

site comprises 11 venues and is divided into two clusters: Coastal and Mountain,

with a total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines being held over venues.

Pico is providing a wide range of temporary infrastructure for the game, including

tents and fencing, as well as taking on a project management role, overseeing all

work related to the overlays installation at the Coastal Cluster and its magnificent

Sochi Olympic Park, which houses the Fischt Olympic Stadium, Bolshoy Ice Dome,

Iceberg Skating Palace and the main Olympic Village, among others.

Pico is also providing 53 tents across both the Coastal and Mountain clusters, with

the biggest tent – a massive 3,750 sq. m. – being located at Olympic Park. These tents

include interior fit-out, heating and ventilation. Completing this work in the runup to

the Olympics was no easy feat, given the harsh winter weather, characterised by severe

storms and furious winds. Every tent, fence and overlay had to be reinforced.

Pico is proud to continue our tradition of delivering high quality work for this, our

6th Olympic Games, and we hope that all athletes from all nations have enjoyed the

moments in their quest for gold and glory.

Acer at the London 2012 Olympics

ACER participated in the London Olympics in two major ways: by offering free-of-charge Internet lounges in several Athletes’ Villages and through the uniquely entertaining ACER Pavilion inside Olympic Park. The exterior of ACER’s 1200 sq. m. three-storey Journey Pavilion featured a ‘living façade’ with 30 moving shutters, working synchronously with a 120 sq. m. LED screen. Inside, ACER gave visitors an experience which allowed them to viscerally feel the excitement and emotion of the Olympics. This experience utilised cutting edge technology, including QR smartcards, a high-definition 3D refractive video projection allowing visitors to interact with the virtual ‘ACERMAN’; a virtual racing board utilising high-tech programming and 3D projection mapping technology; and a Journey Sphere, providing an engaging gaming experience using a unique Pico 360-degree spherical display system. On level three, the Corporate Hospitality Suite was a large open-plan space in which athletes, VIPs and press could relax, watch the Games and enjoy food and drink in an elegant, private setting. A balcony provided stunning views across the Park and covered outdoor seating.

The ACER Internet Lounges were designed to look like large, sweeping petals, creating a serene “garden” feel. This open, relaxed design provided a space for athletes to unwind and keep in touch with friends and family, most of whom were thousands of miles away.

P&G Family Home at the London 2012 Olympics

Before the Olympics, this converted viaduct was a wine museum; but for the

duration of the games it was transformed into the Proctor and Gamble Family Home

for Team USA and other athletic teams from around the world.

Working with Landor Associates, Pico divided the space into comfortable and playful

themed zones, including ‘Cityscape’, ‘Homescape’ and ‘Parkscape’. Adding a layer of

complexity to the work, security arrangements meant that Team USA could not have

any contact with teams from the rest of the world, and thus every sector had to be

duplicated.

Inside, live TV feed of the Games was broadcast around the home, while special

hospitality and entertainment events were held. Pico teams designed and fabricated

the specialist theatrical lighting and trusses, and handled most of the audio visual

elements. In all this was a demanding and exciting project; this incredible makeover

was completed in a mere 14 days.

Pico was a big part of the action elsewhere at the London Olympics, handling the

interior fit-out and graphics for the Olympic broadcasting studios of China’s CCTV

and Japan’s TV Asahi.
