BULLSHOT

Many years ago I had an exceptional college lecturer who taught graphic design and who shared many pearls of wisdom regarding page layout and it’s effect on engagement.

Remembering a private conversation recently, I was prompted to question whether George’s comments were still relevant in today’s world of web-based marketing, design and social media.

Invited to his home for supper, our conversation had run well into the evening. Most other guests had left. A select group of students, including myself had managed to steer the conversation towards the graphic arts.

“Always remember...

...that’s the one image that leaps out and grabs you. It sums up the article as a whole.”

THE BULLSHOT

“It is the story.”

“When looking to layout an article, one of the first considerations is the bullshot.” George continued.

“It’s the photograph that engages, turning a scanner into a reader.”

The photograph is the hook.

There are many parallels between the disciplines of layout for the printed page and on-line design. A landing page can be compared directly to a magazine cover or a feature article.

It has a job to do.

Magazine covers compete with the noise of the news-stand.They stand cheek by jowl with a multitude of other publications.

Exactly the same as a landing page.

There’s a very short window of opportunity to capture and retain the attention of a browsing customer.

Whether static or dynamic, gritty or sensual, the image must be in harmony with both copy and style.

This is why when we look at layout, on-line or in print, the target audience must always be considered.
