ARRIVING AT THE DESIGN

Each and every conservatory, orangery or garden room will be designed specifically for you. We understand what an important decision this is and know from experience that your new room will become the focal point for you and your family and friends.

In order to fulfil your specific needs, each project normally starts with a visit from one of our experienced design consultants. They will be your personal guide and advisor as you explore the myriad design options, statutory consents, budget, process and time considerations for your project. They will listen attentively to your requirements and preferences then discuss the options in depth, before carrying out an initial site survey and preparing a detailed brief for our architects.

Your completed Design Proposal will contain the architect’s line drawings, watercolour presentations, a detailed specification and a written quotation, which should contain all the information you need to reach a decision. However our Design Consultants are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. Amendments to the design may be discussed with them and, when necessary, further drawings will be undertaken to ensure that you’re completely happy with the proposal.

Planning and Approvals

If you wish, our experienced in-house architects can undertake the preparation and submission of all necessary plans, drawings and application forms for statutory consents.

These include Planning Approval, Listed Building Consent, Permitted Development, Building Control and permissions for Private Estates. Please ask your Design Consultant for more information.

This replacement conservatory, in a simple lean-to style, creates a link between the house and a beautiful original stone wall, which surrounds the garden. The soft grey tone of the paintwork picks up the colours from the stone, as well as from surrounding plants.

Hampton Conservatories utilised an existing base to replace an old, draughty conservatory, in the south of England, with this traditional 6 pane design, featuring high specification glazing for optimum thermal insulation. Its soft grey-green paintwork complements the original house, while blending well with the cottage garden setting.

This conservatory measures 6400 mm wide x 2950 mm deep x 3200 mm high with a floor area of 17 sq m. Location, West Sussex.

This conservatory measures 4200 mm wide x 3800 mm deep x 3200 mm high with a floor area of 14.2 sq m. Location, Hampshire.

Hampton Conservatories designed, manufactured and installed this beautiful orangery in the suburbs of Copenhagen. Positioned on a south facing elevation, it enjoys uninterrupted sunlight throughout the day. However thermostatically controlled roof vents, with built-in rain sensors, ensure that it maintains a comfortable pre-set temperature. Internal bi-fold doors allow the kitchen area to be opened fully to the orangery or closed off, when required.

Hamptons created this fabulous orangery, with solid walls at either end, to provide privacy from close neighbours, while allowing access from the first floor drawing room to the garden below. The fully glazed rear elevation is punctuated by double doors that lead, via wide stone steps, to the garden and sunken terrace. In order to create more space and light within the home, Hampton Conservatories also glazed the basement wall.

This orangery measures 6100 mm wide x 4200 mm deep x 3650 mm high with a floor area of 20.5 sq m. Location, Copenhagen.

This classic, double lantern orangery, in the North of England, was designed with Georgian style casements and a clerestory to the front and side. The back wall was built in stone, to match the existing building, and features Hampton Quattro-Glide sliding sash windows, to match those installed throughout the house.

The orangery is used as an elegant and light-filled living and dining area, linked to the kitchen.

This conservatory measures 9200 mm wide x 8900 mm deep x 4200 mm high with a floor area of 74.6 sq m. Location, Northunberland.

This fabulous orangery, which extends across the entire rear elevation of a modern suburban home in Dublin, has allowed the owner to link three original rooms and create an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting space that is both elegant and practical. A ‘break-front’ design with double doors, featuring divided margin fenestration, gives views and access to the small enclosed garden, while large twin lanterns allow sunlight to pour into the heart of the home.

This orangery measures 7000 mm wide x 5000 mm deep x 3600 mm high with a floor area of 35 sq m. Location, Dublin.

The simplest explanation is that a conservatory has a fully glazed, pitched roof, which rests on the external side frames; whereas an orangery has a solid flat roof, with either one or several glazed roof lanterns set into it. Hampton orangeries have a bespoke aluminium support structure, designed and engineered by us, which transfers the load from the glazed lantern back onto the frames. An aluminium box gutter, around the external perimeter, creates an internal flat ceiling that may range from 400mm to over a meter in width. An orangery often has a combination of solid and glazed wall sections, therefore providing additional shade in summer and a greater feeling of enclosure in winter.

Conservatory/orangery: What’s the difference?

Conservatories are frequently created in the most unlikely places and a valuable extra room can be built in a previously unused part of a courtyard or garden. In towns and cities, where many houses and flats have living accommodation and gardens that are small, every square metre is a valuable asset that you can use to improve both the quality of your life and the value of your property. We have designed and built many glazed structures for city properties - extensions to basement flats, additions to first and second floor apartments and even on rooftops.

I would love a conservatory but don’t have a lot of space.

Adding a conservatory or orangery will give you precious extra space, as well as allowing light to flood through sometimes dark interiors and providing expansive views of the outside world. They typically fulfil a wide variety of functions; sitting rooms, dining areas, reading rooms, hobby spaces, studios, kitchen extensions or even just a tranquil place to practice yoga or read the newspaper on a Sunday morning. Of course, with ever improving technology that enables people to work remotely, many find it an extremely pleasant environment from which to work at home. We offer you the opportunity to collaborate with our designers and architects to create a room that will fulfil the potential of unused, or underused space, transforming it into one of the most interesting and useful rooms in your home.

What are conservatories and orangeries really used for?

THINGS THAT MATTER

The owners of this four story Georgian country house wanted an orangery, which could be accessed from their ground floor drawing room, but still allow light to reach the windows of basement rooms, below.

Using an ingenious raised metal terrace, our designers created this elegant orangery featuring a trio of roof lanterns and Hampton’s “A” rated Quattro-Glide sliding sash windows, on a panelled timber base. Decorative pilasters, on the exterior, provide the perfect position for lamp fittings.

However the rear of the home has been transformed, by the addition of a two-story Hampton Conservatory, into a contemporary open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with stunning riverside views. Sunlight floods through the interior of the cottage, spreading to the galleried bedrooms and filling the once dark house with light.

This extensive project features both a Hampton Orangery & Hampton Conservatory, which together almost double the original reception space of the house. Both structures feature divided margin fenestration and are linked by an expansive terrace, which is accessed by double doors from both rooms. The result is a generous relaxation and dining area that is perfect for either family or large scale entertaining.

This striking curvilinear style glasshouse was designed by Hamptons as the focal point within a two-acre walled garden. It is an important lynchpin in the landscape design, which has a dramatic, formal framework enclosing softer planting. The complex conservatory design creates varying internal roof heights, allowing tender trees, shrubs and flowers to be grown in close proximity, while adding interest to the structure.

Hampton Conservatories was commissioned to replicate this listed glasshouse, as the original structure had become dilapidated and unstable. Close liaison with the appointed conservation architect ensured that compulsory conditions were adhered to and the new structure was practically indistinguishable from the original.

Porto, PortugalIn 2011, the Symington Family Estates launched a project to renovate Graham’s Port Wine Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The historic building, dating back to 1890, annually receives more than 60,000 visitors from around the world to tour the distillery and taste the Port wine. Our client requested a conservatory extension that wouldn’t compromise the traditional architecture of the Wine Lodge, but would allow the family to create a restaurant and wine bar area that could provide a comfortable and impressive environment for visitors, all year round. Hampton Conservatories designed, manufactured and installed a 27 metre by 5.6 metre hipped conservatory on the terrace, beneath existing grape vines. Bi-folding doors, at either end, enable the dining space to be extended onto the terrace in summer, while plain window sashes allow an uninterrupted view of the Douro River and the city on its banks.

Boston, USAIn 1920, the Harvard Faculty Club was set up as a private facility for paying members only. However, more recently, it opened its doors to all members of the university community. Offering elegant dining in a sophisticated setting, the original building soon required an extended dining space, to accommodate the increasing numbers. Hampton Conservatories was commissioned to design a glass and timber structure that would blend with, and enhance, the historic faculty building. The resulting orangery combines the traditional Harvard ambiance of the Faculty Club with the flexibility to accommodate custom events.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, DenmarkPurchasing a bespoke conservatory from another country may seem like a daunting process, but Hamptons ensure that the procedure is uncomplicated and stress-free. Unless an outline design or brief has already been prepared by a local architect, our Design Consultant will normally take initial instructions by phone and email, before carrying out a site visit to ensure our complete understanding of the requirements. This project, in Copenhagen, was characteristically straight-forward. Hamptons designed an orangery extension for the rear of the property, which extends from, and enlarges, the existing kitchen area to provide an indoor eating area. Double doors, leading to the terrace, allow the option of outdoor dining in summer.

Carcassonne, FranceWhen an existing client wanted to add a conservatory to their holiday home in the south of France, their regular Hampton Design Consultant met them at the property to discuss the needs and preferences of the family. It became clear that whilst their newly refurbished kitchen was spacious and functional, the heavy stone walls and small windows of the traditional French building made it dark and uninviting. Hamptons liaised with the client’s local architect to ensure that all planning and conservation requirements were adhered to and our designers created a classic design that was sympathetic to the beautiful stone chateau, while providing an airy, light-filled dining area that had easy access to the paved courtyard.

This conservatory measures 9440 mm wide x 9440 mm deep x 6000 mm high with a floor area of 89.1 sq m. Location, Boston, USA.

This impressive conservatory was created as an extension to the existing Restaurant and Wine Bar, at a Symington Port Lodge. Hampton Conservatories made use of the pathway at the front of the original 19th century building to create a large hipped conservatory with five section bi-fold doors on either end, which allow the space to be used in comfort on a year round basis. During winter, it can be entirely closed to the elements but still allow expansive views of the city below, while in summer, with the doors open and the roof shaded by mature grape vines, it becomes part of the terrace.

This charming orangery in Jersey was designed for one of the island’s most important buildings and with sections dating back to the mid 16th century, it was imperative that the orangery would respect, and blend with, its architecture. This was achieved by constructing solid walls using local stone, which matched the main building, and were topped with the same coping stone. These concealed the glazed roof of the lantern, which was dressed with lead coloured aluminium powder-coating. The walls were then inset with bespoke windows, manufactured to replicate the originals.

This orangery measures 5949 mm wide x 5740 mm deep x 4005 mm high with a floor area of 34.14 sq m. Location, Jersey.

Nestled on 1,000 acres of undulating Irish countryside, dotted with ancient woodlands and glittering lakes, Castle Leslie is one of the finest luxury hotels in Ireland. Therefore it’s no surprise that, when undertaking extensive restoration, the Trustees engaged Hamptons to renovate its existing orangery.

Drawing on 30 years’ experience in conservation and listed building projects, Hamptons added bespoke hardwood windows, which sympathetically dressed the magnificent arched and corbelled stone facade. A pitched, gabled roof capped in powder-coated aluminium was added to provide a low maintenance, yet traditional finish, marrying the orangery with the imposing castle buildings.

LANTERNSA lantern or roof-light will transform rooms that may, currently, have little natural light. Areas that achieve maximum benefit from the addition of a roof-lantern include kitchens, stairwells, flat roofed extensions and internal or low ceilinged rooms. In commercial properties, restaurants or hotels, the increased sense of space and light will completely change the ambience of a room, making it a much more appealing venue.

ORANGERY ROOF DETAILS

Our in-house design and engineering departments have devised a revolutionary roof system, featuring a combination of hardwood, supported by our unique aluminium and galvanised steel support system.

It represents a breakthrough in orangery design as its strength, combined with light weight, means that the external entablature can be lighter and narrower than the conventional steel and glulam beam construction. Consequently it can be designed and manufactured in any depth, allowing Hamptons to offer an entablature that is correctly proportioned, based on the height of the building, other manufactures cannot do this, making their entablatures bulky and out of proportion. Finer ‘Common’ and ‘Jack’ rafters also add to the refined profile of the Hampton roof. The internal frieze, which has a cornice moulding, has the option of being plain or panelled.

‘THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL’

These photos illustrate a small sample of the fine joinery and hardware detailing that has been included in previous Hampton projects and will give you a flavour of what is possible. It is this ability to exactly replicate architectural features from the host property, as well as precise attention to detail and classical proportioning, which distinguishes a bespoke Hampton project from a run-of-the-mill conservatory.
