7 steps to kicking your kids ipad addiction. Limit Solo Time Make sure that devices can only be used in “communal” areas in your home. Do not allow devices to be taken back to the bedroom. In fact, ideally you want to keep the bedroom totally tech free as any form of tech can seriously impact their sleeping patterns. Also, take a long hard look at whether the child need the tech in the first place. Passwords protect you and them. Always, but always ensure you have a safe and totally secret password for your tech and do not ever let it slip out. This is especially true where it is possible to make online purchases with a credit card etc. Fair Warning Be fair, it's only right to warn them in advance when it's time to put the game away. So, to avoid a tantrum of note, simply warn them 10 minutes before they need to turn off and then 5 minutes before again. You are in charge so simply take it away and reduce the time they have with it tomorrow by 5 minutes. They will soon get the idea. Old School Games and playing are more than a distraction, they are the single most important learning tool children have. Go old school and ensure they have access to toys that will enhance their learning and keep them busy for ages. Things like puzzles, drawing & painting, Lego, plasticine etc. The Key here is to make sure you have as few toys as possible else it totally defeats the object. Pot Calling the Kettle Black Its not rocket science, your children emulate your actions in order to learn the correct way of doing things. If you are stuck to your phone all the time, they will see that as how they should behave. So parents should put your phones and tablets down and spend time with your child. They’ll be all grown up soon and wont have ever have a proper conversation with their parents… Accept that you need to change too. Are you dependent on mobile devices to keep the kids quiet? Your iPad babysitter is not doing your child any favours and will very quickly become a crutch. Remember, your parents survived you without an iPad at hand…
