It’s considered pretty normal to wear t-shirts and jumpers emblazoned with your favourite band. Some people pull it off awesomely. Unfortunately, some of us are not that adept at pulling it off with style, and instead, we look like some kind of space bum (Lister springs to mind!). There are rules when wearing merchandise, and if you fail to stick to them, well it can make you look a bit silly indeed. It’s cool to wear band merchandise, but only if you stick to the following four rules:

Don’t go all out.OK, so maybe you love the band. It’s the best band that in the history of forever. You want everyone to know just how awesome they are, and you can’t help it, but you feel amazing covered head-to-toe in their “colours”. Don’t do this. For example, if you love Pink Floyd, don’t wear clothes that make it look as if their gift ship just threw up on you. There is a tipping point where something cool can turn into something creepy, and frankly, stalker-esque. If you wear merchandised t-shirts, trousers, shoes, hairbands, etc. all at once, you will come across as somewhat obsessed. That’s not a good look. You might love the band, but just take a bit of a chill approach to it.

• Make sure you know the band and their music.People that have an authentic appreciation for the band will generally frown heavily upon people wearing their merchandise without knowing much about them. The band that this affects the most is The Rolling Stones. Their logo translates very well into clothing. However, while it looks cool, we would advise against wearing it unless you know quite a bit about the band. Otherwise, you risk coming across as a wanabe try hard. You're trying to fit in, but you’re not doing the right thing, which is appreciating the music. If you don’t like the music, that’s fine, but don’t then wear the t-shirt. Instead, find another band that you like, such as Small Faces. A Small Faces T shirt is a relatively rare find. You'll look great and you can get to know a great band too – they have fewer songs than The Rolling Stones, so you won’t have a lot to catch up on. Plus, fewer people have heard of Small Faces than The Rolling Stones, and some of them won’t even know who they are.

A Small Faces T shirt can be a great conversation starter, but heed our warning: make sure you know enough about them to start a discussion. • Like the band.Following on very closely from the above, as well as knowing the band, it’s also important to like the band too. Some merchandise clothing looks awesome, and it’s very tempting to buy it even when you don’t like the band that much. We would advise against this, because you are going to receive a lot of attention from people that do like the band. They’ll probably sing songs to you, and maybe even force you to listen to their songs too. If you don’t like them, this will wear thin very fast.

Finally, don’t copy the crowd. Wear the clothes because you want to. Yes, The Rolling Stones are cool, but if you don’t like them, you don’t like them, and that’s the end of it. Don’t do things just to fit in; that’s about as far from the spirit of rock and roll that you can get! If you are interested in buying merchandise, please visit sherryslondon.com
