Create the right environment for intrinsic motivation – so people want to come to work.
Measure performance - don't set arbitrary targets.
Build trust so that people are happy to come to you with their problems.
Manage performance and identify the root cause of any underlying issues.
Be consistently fair rather than fairly consistent.
Reward people for their performance, not their attendance.
Use trigger points, thresholds and scores but only as prompts – apply your own judgement.
