In California, there are certain recommended behaviors that will help you to arrange an optimal child custody case, and others that will harm it. Take heed of these 45 tips:

1. Be aware that the courts look for what is in the best interest of the child. Refrain from thinking and acting like what is in your best interest is most important. The system exists to help kids remain safe and well cared-for. While you may not alwaysagree with decisions, do your best to understand them and look at things objectively, for your children.

2. Be as logical as possible when making custody decisions. Needless drama can hurtyour image in the eyes of the court.

3. Be sensitive to your child's feelings and thought processes as he/she navigates the break up.

4. Never talk badly about the other parent or try to convince the child to dislike or disapprove of the other parent.

5. Find an attorney who is experienced in child custody. Custody is not an area to "do-it-yourself"

6. Ensure you are comfortable with your attorney and feel that he or she will be a strong advocate for you. If you are not able to effectively communicate with your attorney, the process can be extended unnecessarily.

7. Be honest with your attorney about aspects of your lifestyle. 8. When you are not clear regarding issues of child custody or court, ask your attorney

to clarify for you. 9. Always follow court orders to the letter, despite the other parent's behaviors. The

other parent may be difficult to deal with and they may even be failing to adhere to court decisions. However, it is your job to do what you have been required to, according to child custody court outcome. If necessary, re-engage with your attorney and address the other parent's behaviors by using the court system as it is intended.

10. If a parenting schedule is in place make sure to follow it precisely even if the other parent does not. Keep notes as to each day and what was followed and what was not. Also, take note of anything that appears to be a problem.
