What do patients really want?

Patients today are met with an increasing array of choices to be made when it comes to their health and treatment 1

Weve come a long way since paternalistic days where patient was a passive participant in their journey, manhandled through treatments of the teams choosing.2

Like it or not, patients are becoming informed about options and taking a more active role in their therapy.3

With empowerment comes ownership and responsibility for some of the difficult choices to be made. Every decision point requires the patient and their carers to consider the trade offs.4

Yet when it comes to evaluating which medicines and therapies should be subsidised and made available to Australian patients, we have a process that balances the health economic considerations but no rigorous method of incorporating the values of patients into the decision making process. While there is opportunity for input into the submissions that go before the pharmaceutical benefits advisory committee, there is no current systematic way to apportion value to the various considerations and represent the patient voice in a meaningful way.5

It all boils down to how our own experience shapes our views and so Janssen embarked on a project to try and capture what really matters to patients in a systematic way. This pilot was designed to demonstrate to evaluators how they might incorporate the patients perspective in a way that truly informs their decision making. Janssen commissioned the University of South Australias Institute for Choice to undertake this work and here to take you through the initiative is Simon Fifer. 6
