KNOWLEDGE REGARDING IMPORTANCE OF MEDITATION AMONG

HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS(+2 LEVEL)

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Study Meditation is a practice of concentrated focus upon a

sound, object, visualization, the breath, movement, or attention itself in order to increase awareness of the present moment, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance personal and spiritual growth.

“Meditation means being meditative, silent, peaceful, with no thoughts in the mind and it is consciousness without content. When a mirror is not reflecting anything, it is meditation”, said Gautam Buddha.

The word mediation is derived from two Latin words: meditari (to think, to dwell upon, and to exercise the mind) and the mederi (to heal). It is originally from Sanskrit word “medha” which means wisdom. Buddha is one of the biggest proponents in the meditation history. Buddha has been also known as one of the biggest meditation representations around since 500 B.C.(Jones, 2008).

It has also been said that meditation has originated from shamatha, which is the Sanskrit term for the basic foundation of calm and relaxed bare attention. Such calm acknowledging is the essential and fundamental step, a ‘’letting go’’ that allows the meditator to access the next stages (Austin, 2006).

Meditation or “dhyana” is an extreme form of concentration. It allows your mind to focus on one thing and detaches you from all worldly things. Meditation is one of the 8 Limbs of Yoga. It is believed that all divine powers live in the heart and meditation is the only route to dive deep into your heart.

Some of the health benefits of meditation are:-Reduces anxiety attacks as it lowers the levels of

blood lactate.Builds self confidence. Helps to keep blood pressure normal.Reduces stress and tension.Increases concentration and strengthens the mind.Helps to reduce heart disease.Helps with weight loss.

1.2. Statement of Problem

Schools are recognizing that children today are experiencing more anxiety and stress than ever before. Research highlights this growing concern

• A study shows that the percentage of children aged 5-17 using antidepressants more than doubled between 1993 and 2003(Kaiser,May 29, 2013),which could be reduced by using meditation

According to the Department of Health & Human Services, mental health problems affect one in every five young people at any given time, and the rate of depression among adolescents may be as high as one in eight. Researchers have also found that among 9 to 17 year-olds, as many as 13 of every 100 young people have an anxiety disorder, and these children often have more than one disorder.(Orsatti M ,May 29, 2013)

A study of more than 3,000 children in the San Francisco Unified School District found a dramatic improvement in math test scores and overall academic performance among students who practiced Transcendental Meditation, a form of mediation that promotes relaxation and “an awakening” of the mind. The study also found a decrease in student suspensions, expulsions and dropout rates.

(Orsatti M ,May 29, 2013)

According to Dayna Macy, communication director for Yoga Journal magazine, there were 1 million U.S. Yoga practitioners in 1990.

A Roper poll commissioned by Yoga Journal in 1994 found there were 6 million Yoga practitioners in the United States at that time, with 1.86 million of them being regular practitioners, and another 17 million who expressed interest in Yoga but hadn’t tried it yet.

1.3. Rationale of the Study

College students are particularly prone to psychological distress caused by academic pressures, financial strains and uncertain futures. students of today are bombarded with unnecessary stresses, most that lead to health problems later down the line. Among these are hypertension (high blood pressure), depression and anxiety.

Meditation practices can assist students in their studies, and it has proven to be one of the more effective methods to eliminate stresses and depression. Just sitting in a lone state of mind, clearing your mind for any short amount of time, and freeing your mind of all it's troubles can be helpful. Meditation techniques can help college students relax and re-focus their energy.

A study conducted by American University, for publication in the American Journal of Hypertension in December of 2009, revealed that students taking part in meditation exercises displayed lower blood pressure, as well as an improvement in their mental health.

A study found that African Americans with heart disease who regularly practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique were 48 percent less likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or die from all causes compared with African Americans who attended a health education class over more than five years.

Hence college students faces different stressful situation in their student life. The research has found that meditation lowers stress , increase concentration in student .so I want to study whether the students of pinnacle academy has knowledge on importance of meditation or not.

1.4. Significance of the Study

The finding of the study might help the planner, policy maker and curriculum planner to plan and implement program on importance of meditation.

This study might explore the perception, existing trend & attitude of secondary & higher secondary students towards meditation.

This study provides knowledge and attitude towards meditation among higher secondary students of Nepal.

Finding of this study might provide baseline information regarding knowledge of meditation for further researcher.
