Hello Friends! I hope you have had a wonderful, happy and healthy summer. Friends of Robison has

a lot of good news to share.

We are so proud to tell you that in June we were able to purchase an eight passenger van to transport our residents to their appointments. The previous van had over 180,000 miles on it and when asked if we could help provide the funds for a new one, we were happy to help!

The first phase of the Harold Schnitzer Health and Rehabilitation Care Center opened in late July and is absolutely amazing and we hope you were able to tour it before the first 12 residents moved in. It is truly a home, with the kitchen as its center. The residents love their private rooms and bathrooms and the homelike setting. Friends of Robison will be helping to make them happy in their new home. Our annual membership mailing went out in July with a request for annual dues of $25.00 and enhanced support for our lifetime members. We hope everyone will be generous so that we can continue to provide for the residents on the campus of Cedar Sinai Park.

Please don’t forget about Tributes! They are a great way to show your support. For a minimum of $10.00, you can honor a loved one or memorialize someone you have lost. You can contact one of the three tribute secretaries listed on the next page or go online and make a tribute to the Friends of Robison. Simply go to http://cedarsinaipark.org/friends. Finally, we hope you will join us on Sunday, September 25 for our annual Bingo fundraiser chaired by Amy Milbert. $18.00 buys you a bingo card, treats and fun! We have great prizes for the winners. Please look for your invitation. Reservations are a must so that we can reserve your space. Please send your $18.00 check to Friends of Robison at 6125 SW Boundary St, Portland, OR 97221-1019. Thank you again for all your support! We cannot do the work we do without you!

Warmly,

Michelle GradowPresident, Friends of Robison

Watch for our next newsletter in December!

If you’ve been to Robison recently you’ve certainly noticed some changes. Half of the building is closed

down for renovation, and the other half seems to be shrinking daily. Part of the closure includes the synagogue, which is being remodeled and will reopen in early 2017. Faced with the scarcity of gathering spaces, we’ve gotten creative in how to come together as a group for things like meals, activities and Shabbat observances. The outdoor patio by Joseph Hall beckons when the weather is agreeable. The adjacent solarium offers a cozy corner for singing and visiting. And the residents in the recently opened Green House® home have invited their neighbors over for socializing in their new digs. All High Holiday services and celebrations will be held at Rose Schnitzer Manor, bringing together residents from across the campus. This year, more than ever, helpful volunteers are needed to accompany

A NOTE FROM MICHELLE

LIKE WANDERING THE DESERTRobison residents to and from the services, crossing Boundary Street each time. Please be in touch with me if you’d like to assist in this or any way with the holidays. Just as the ancient Hebrews learned to be resourceful and creative during their 40-year trek through the Sinai, knowing that something better awaited them, so too will we find the strength to stay calm and carry on during this big journey of change at the Robison Home.

Cedar Sinai Park continues to lead the way in meeting the changing lifestyle needs and desires of seniors. Its latest collaboration with THE GREEN HOUSE® project is evident in the construction occurring on the campus. The Green House model was started more than a decade ago to provide a community-based home environment for its residents, thereby transforming long-term care services. As of June, the organization reported an important milestone: more than 200 Green House homes are being operated by leading organizations in 30 states. Cedar Sinai Park opened the first of its four Green House homes in July, and is proud to be the first in Oregon. The term “green” – especially in the Pacific Northwest – connotes environmentally friendly building materials and waste management. In the context of the Green House® model, “green” relates to “growth,” “life,” and “energy” – traits with which all humans can relate. The physical environment of a Green House home is designed to transform the institutional nursing facility into an environment that is warm, supportive, and comforting.

At Cedar Sinai Park, we are building the Harold Schnitzer Health and Rehabilitation Care Center (HSHRCC) to preserve the individuality and freedom anyone would enjoy in their own home. When completed, the HSHRCC will be made up of four homes, each with twelve individual rooms built around a central living area and kitchen. A living room with a hearth is the center of life in the home, and where residents share meals together. Staff are present to cook and care for each home’s residents, further ensuring a sense of community and family. Each resident has their own room and bathroom with access to the common area kitchen and living area whenever they desire. “The Green House model allows CSP residents and staff alike to achieve more powerful, meaningful, and satisfying lives, work, and relationships,” says Sandra Simon, CEO of Cedar Sinai Park. “This re-styled model of living honors not only the seniors who want to have more of a home life, it honors the Jewish values of aging upon which Cedar Sinai Park was started almost 100 years ago.”

Clockwise: Dorothy Lerner, Ellen Feldman, Phyllis Green and Lillian Steinberg feel comfortable and happy in their beautiful new household.

The first of four new Green House households has opened at Cedar Sinai Park and its 12 residents have settled in and are enjoying their new home.

The move-ins went smoothly and efficiently; thanks to the work of each resident’s own private “Shahbaz.” The Shahbazim at Cedar Sinai Park are Certified Nurse Assistants whose job is to sustain and enrich the lives of the members of each household.

Each of the private rooms is furnished with a bed, dresser, chair and table in addition to private bathrooms with showers. “You can decorate your own room how you want it, according to your own taste,” said Ellen Feldman, whose room is personalized with wildlife artwork that reminds her of her days working at Yellowstone National Park. “I love having my own room!”

Delicious meals are prepared in the kitchens of each household and residents have the choice of eating together or privately and also have the option of inviting guests to join them for meals. The kitchen is open throughout the day for the preparation of meals, drinks, and nosh.

Communal areas are warm and create opportunities for more social interaction and less isolation. The luxurious family room features a large fireplace, big screen TV, comfortable seating areas and a game table. Each household also has a large library, (feel free to contribute books) a washer and dryer and a large non-kosher refrigerator for “food brought in.”

Residents will regularly convene for meetings to discuss food choices, activities, rules and other topics involved with making the households run smoothly. Lillian Steinberg observed that “Good manners are a plus when you start living with strangers. You need to adjust to what’s okay and what’s not okay as far as other people are concerned.”

Four of the contented new inhabitants were eager to share their impressions after spending the first night in their plush new setting. When asked how her first 24 hours went, Lillian Steinberg said, “I had a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast.” Dorothy Lerner shared that “It’s nice to have my own furniture” and Phyllis Green said, “It’s a nice change.”
