PURPOSE:• To characterize the clinical features, histopathological

evaluation and treatment outcomes in a case with biopsy proven limbal squamous cell carcinoma.

CLINICAL SUMMARY:• A solitary gelatinous nodule present over the right eye

limbal area temporally.• Progressing over a period of 6-8 weeks.

Ocular examination:

• Right eye• A solitary elevated fleshy, gelatinous lesion with well

defined border present in the interpalpebral fissure over juxtalimbal area temporally with tufts of feeder blood vessels.

• Left eye : Normal Pre operative photo

Intervention:• Excisional biopsy with 3mm margin, with closure of residual

space with conjunctival graft and cryotherapy to the edges of excision was done.

• Topical chemotherapy in the form of Mitomycin C eye drops(0.02%) four times a day in a two week cycle(2 cycle) was given.

• Patient has not shown any signs of recurrence till date.

Biopsy report:• The epithelium exhibits hyperplasia, loss of goblet cells, loss

of normal cell polarity, nuclear hyperchromasia and pleomorphism, and mitotic figures atypia, involvement of the epithelium, with squamous eddies or keratin whorls/pearls is seen.

• Surgical margins were free from tumor cells.

Differential diagnoses & Lab investigations:

• Conjunctival naevus• Limbal dermoid• Conjunctival lymphoma• Conjunctival kaposi sarcoma• Pingecula• Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia• Pyogenic granuloma• Pterygium

• Relevant laboratory investigations --within normal limits.• Patient underwent wide excision biopsy with cryo therapy to the edges of excision. • The excised tissue was sent for histopathological evaluation which shows SQUAMOUS

CELL CARCINOMA.

FOLLOW UP OF PATIENT:

Patient is being watched for a) Metastasisb) Local recurrence of corneal, scleral, intraocular& intraorbital.

FUTURE PLAN:In case of metastasis or recurrence- Exenteration of orbit.

Conclusion: Clinical suspicion, biopsy and timely surgical intervention and topical chemotherapy are essential in a case of Squamous cell carcinoma of limbus.
