How about gender equality?While everyone needs access to proper sanitation to be healthy, for girls and women this is also an issue of safety and equal participation in society

Better sanitation, better nutrition, better health50% of all cases of malnutrition are associated with repeated diarrhoea or intestinal worm infections as a result of inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene

The world must not wait!1000 children die daily from diarrhoeahdiseases linked to a lack of safe water, sanitation and basic hygiene.

More broadly, close to half of all child deaths are related to malnutrition and suboptimal feeding practices, which is often linked

Some Facts

Disease transmission at work, mostly caused by poor sanitation and hygiene practices, causes 17% of all workplace deaths (International Labour Organization (ILO) 2003)

Loss of productivity due to illnesses caused by lack of sanitation and poor hygiene practices is estimated to cost many countries up to 5% of GDP (Hutton 2012)

Providing toilets to people in rural areas currently practising open defecation is estimated to result in benefits that exceed costs 5-7x (Hutton 2015)

In India, the time spent looking for a toilet or finding somewhere to go in the open costs the economy over $10 billion every year in lost productivity – 20% of GDP (World Bank 2016)
