• Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans.
• The parasites enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells.
• The parasites multiply inside the red blood cells, which then break open within 48 to 72 hours, infecting more red blood cells.
World Malaria Day
• A bite from a parasite-infected mosquito causes malaria. There are
five species of Plasmodium (P.) parasites
1. Plasmodium falciparum2. Plasmodium vivax3. Plasmodium malariae4. Plasmodium ovale5. Plasmodium knowlesi
Causes
Symptoms
• Common symptoms are like
1. Fever2. Chills
3. Headache4. Sweats5. Fatigue6. Nausea and Vomiting7. Muscle or Joint pain8. Backache
The symptoms attacks may occur every other day or every third day
Preventions
• Use mosquito repellent and insecticides
• Take medical help as soon as malaria is suspected
• Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes, since mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors
• Use Bed nets
• Get rid of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
Cures
• There are basically 3 main drugs that can be used to cure malaria.
1. Chloroquine & Progunail is to be taken daily and its recommended for the Indian sub-continent.
2. Doxycyline & Malarone its taken daily and should be taken with a meal rich in fats.
3. Mefloquine is an alternative to Malarone or Doxycyline in areas with chloroquine-resistant Malaria, ie Africa.
