Protein is a very important molecule that we need in our diet to survive. It allows us to maintain healthy skin, hair and nails by building new cells and repairing damaged tissue. It helps our body to produce enzymes, keeps our immune system functioning and helps us grow. Protein is not a direct fuel source and is only used as a fuel source when there is either an excess amount of proteins or a lack of carbohydrates. However, if protein is to be taken away from our diet then our body would start to break down muscle to compensate for the loss. You can find high amounts of protein in meat, nuts, legumes, grains, eggs and milk.
