Uses of Famciclovir Tablets

Famciclovir tablets is used for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), acute treatment of first episode and recurrences of genital herpes infections, and for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes. Famciclovir is also used for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores). Virovir Tablets are also used to treat immunocompromised patients with herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections.

Virovir (Famciclovir Tablets) have to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20C to 25C (68F to 77F) with excursions permitted between 15 to 30C (59 to 86F). Keep this as well as all other medicines away from children and pets.

Herpes labialis (cold sores): The recommended dosage of Famciclovir tablets for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis is 1500 mg as a single dose. Therapy should be started at the first sign or symptom of herpes labialis (e.g., tingling, itching, burning, pain, or lesion).

Recurrent Episodes of Genital herpes: The recommended dosage of Famciclovir tablets for the treatment of recurrent episodes of genital herpes is 1000 mg twice daily for one day. Treatment must be started at the first sign or symptom of a recurrent episode (e.g., tingling, itching, burning, pain, or lesion).

Suppressive therapy: The recommended dosage of Famciclovir tablets for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent episodes of genital herpes is 250 mg twice daily.

Warnings

Acute renal failure: May occur in patients with underlying renal disease who receive higher than recommended doses of Virovir (Famciclovir Tablets) for their level of renal function. Reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment.

Contraindications

Virovir is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Famciclovir, any other ingredient of this medication or Denavir (Penciclovir cream).

Famciclovir Side Effects

The Famciclovir side effects reported by more than 10% of adult patients are headache and nausea.

The other common side effects of Virovir (Famciclovir Tablets) include Dizziness,Vomiting, Abnormal liver function tests, Rash, pruritus. Uncommon side effects include Confusion (predominantly in the elderly), Somnolence (predominantly in the elderly), Angioedema (e.g. face edema, eyelid edema, periorbital edema, pharyngeal edema) and urticaria. Rare side effects include Thrombocytopenia, Hallucinations and Cholestatic jaundice.

Cases of serious skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis have been reported from post-marketing experience with Famciclovir Tablets via spontaneous case reports.

Overdose

Appropriate symptomatic and supportive therapy should be given in case of overdose of Virovir (Famciclovir Tablets) . Penciclovir is removed by hemodialysis.

Famciclovir During Pregnancy

Famciclovir (Virovir Tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. After oral administration, Famciclovir is converted to Penciclovir (active drug). There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Famciclovir or Penciclovir use in pregnant women. No adverse effects on embryofetal development were observed in animal reproduction studies. Since animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, Famciclovir should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
