Be Aware By Premiere Environmental February 7, 2014 It is important to have adequate indoor air quality to maintain a healthy life style. If the air in your home is polluted it can cause asthma, bronchitis, or lung infections. It is important to be aware of how to properly ventilate your home and to identify possible pollutants. Sources of indoor air pollutants could be combustibles such as gas, coal, wood, oil, or tobacco. Building materials may also put you at risk, such as: insulation containing asbestos, wet/damp carpet, and certain pressed wood products. Household cleaning products, heating and cooling humidification devices, and outdoor air pollution, like pesticides, that may be entering the home, could also cause additional indoor air pollution. Make sure your appliances are properly adjusted. You don’t want to have a mal-‐adjusted gas stove in your home because you may be exposed to carbon monoxide. It may be helpful to put a monoxide monitor in your home, much like a smoke alarm. Proper ventilation can alleviate many indoor air pollution woes. If not enough outside air enters the home pollutants can accumulate inside to dangerous levels. Homes are normally insulated very well and built so that air doesn’t leak in. In these cases, it is important to have ways to mechanically ventilate, such as an exhaust fan. It is very important to monitor and correct the pollution indoors because the health effects and begin immediately. Exposure to indoor pollution can irritate eyes, nose and throat and cause dizziness and fatigue. Additionally, it could cause diseases such as asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever. Long-‐term effects could be respiratory disease, heart disease or cancer. Check the combustibles, building materials, and ventilation in your home and work place to ensure your health and the health of those around you.
