Adult acne myths abound! Here’s the truth on these myths!

People have all sorts of different ideas about acne, where it comes from, and how to treat it. And while these ideas are well-meaning, they can sometimes do more harm than good! Here are some of the most common acne myths, and the truth about them!

Adult Acne Myth #1: Eating Chocolate Will Give You Acne

This one is the oldest myth in the book. It’s been going around for decades now, but there’s just no real evidence to support this one. Other diet-based theories on the cause of adult acne include milk and caffeine, but again, these have not been proven conclusively.

Adult Acne Myth #2: Adults Don’t Get Acne

Nope. While teenagers might get hit the worst with acne, many adults suffer from it as well. In fact, in our previous article on adult acne, I mentioned research done by Dr. Jonette Keri, an

American dermatologist, which suggests that up to 30% of adult women and 20% of adult men deal with acne.

Adult Acne Myth #3: Acne is Caused by a Dirty Face

Believe it or not, acne actually has little to do with cleanliness, and more to do with your sebaceous gland. Washing your face is important, of course, but if you wash it too often you might actually be doing more harm than good! Stick to twice a day at most, and you’re in good shape.

Adult Acne Myth #4: Makeup Will Make Your Acne Worse

This one is actually somewhat true. If you use a thick liquid foundation, it can end up clogging your pores, making your acne problem worse. A lighter powder foundation is much easier on your skin. However, liquid foundation does do a better job of covering up acne, so it’s a catch 22.

Adult Acne Myth #5: Acne is Just a Surface Issue

There’s more to it than that. Sure, acne affects the surface of your skin, but it also affects how you feel about yourself. Especially for those suffering from adult acne, it can have a negative impact on your self esteem and your confidence, and it can also leave permanent scars.
