Grocery Guru

Every season of life brings changes and adjustments to the body. Life span of an average person has

increased dramatically, however, knowledge of the nutritional needs as we age is not kept at pace.

Youth forgives Dietary abuse - side effects of bad eating habits manifest themselves later in life with

metabolic disorders such as hypertension, diabetes & most of all high blood cholesterol levels.

Let’s target the most common and underestimated problem of high cholesterol. When a person has

high cholesterol, he/she may develop fatty deposits in blood vessels. Eventually these deposits make

it difficult for enough blood to flow through arteries. Heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood

as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack.

High cholesterol can be inherited, but is often preventable and treatable. A healthy diet, regular

exercise and sometimes medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol.

Here are a few cholesterol-lowering items for your kitchen that have been identified available at

your local grocery store:

Mutli grain flour – A perfect blend of whole wheat flour, ragi, jowar, oats and bengal gram

flour which is a good source of fiber.

Brown Rice-Gives goodness of fiber, B-complex vitamins. Best for pulao or biryani.

Oats- Regular consumption of oats helps lower cholesterol.

Groundnut, olive or rice bran cooking oils - Rich in MUFA - 1 liter sufficient for 2 adults per

month.

Garlic and allicin-containing compound which is heart friendly.

Kidney beans- Rich in fiber helps to reduce post meal blood sugars as well.

Walnuts and flaxseeds (alsi) - Rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which provide cardio

protection.

Tofu lite/low fat paneer instead of whole milk paneer to meet your protein requirements.

Lean cuts of chicken, low fat fish over red and organ meats to cut down on the cholesterol

consumption.

So make these right choices for a healthy kitchen and healthy you.
