What is body image?Body  image  is  the  way  that  

someone  perceives  their  body  and  assumes  that  others  perceive  them.  This  image  is  often  affected  by  

family,  friends,  social  pressure  and  the  media.

Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape.

Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.

• 75% of girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities such as disordered eating, cutting, bullying, smoking, or drinking when feeling badly about themselves (Compared to 25% of girls with high self-esteem)o 61% of teen girls with low self-esteem admit to talking badly about

themselves (Compared to 15% of girls with high self-esteem)o 25% of teen girls with low self-esteem resort to injuring themselves

on purpose or cutting when feeling badly about themselves (Compared to 4% of girls with high self-esteem)

o 25% of teen girls with low self-esteem practice disordered eating, such as starving themselves, refusing to eat, or over-eating and throwing up when feeling badly about themselves (Compared to 7% of girls with high self-esteem)

•The  average  U.S.  woman  is  5’4”  and  weighs  140  pounds  whereas  the  average  U.S.  model  is  5’11”  and  weighs  117  pounds.

•44%  of  women  who  are  average  or  underweight  think  that  they  are  overweight.  

•30%  of  women  chose  an  ideal  body  shape  that  is  20%  underweight  and  an  additional  44%  chose  an  ideal  body  shape  that  is  10%  underweight.
