A highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr. Crewe-Brown has been in-volved in laser eye surgery for 19 years and has performed more than 30,000 proce-dures including LASIK, LASEK and WaveFront-guided treatments as well as undertaking the treatment of complex cases. He was one of the early users of the femtosecond laser (IntraLase) in the UK and Ireland and has to date performed more than 4,000 femtosec-ond procedures.

His dedication to his profession and patients is evident from his clinical experience and continued attendance at national and international seminars and conferences as both speaker and delegate.

Mr. Crewe-Brown is fully registered on the Specialist Register of the Irish Medical Coun-cil, General Medical Council of Great Britain (GMC) and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Mr. Conall Hurley - MB BCh BAO FRCSIConsultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Mr. Hurley qualified from University College Cork School of Medicine in 1984. He carried out a primary fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1986 and a fellowship in Ocular Oncology and Oculoplastics in Glasgow in 1999.

Mr. Hurley has carried out over 10,000 laser procedures in refractive surgery. He also carries out Cataract, Corneal and Glaucoma services and has performed in excess of 10,000 lens implant procedures.

Mr. Hurley is fully registered on the Specialist Register of the Irish Medical Council. He has been a lecturer in Ophthalmology in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ire-land, the University of Birmingham in England as well as the University of Glasgow in Scotland and has also acted as an examiner in the Fellowship in Ophthalmology in both Ireland as well as in the UK.

What is IntraLase?

The IntraLase method is the most advanced and ac-curate manner in which to create the flap during your LASIK procedure. This blade-free method uses Femto-second (quadrillionth of a second) pulses of laser to cre-ate the flap. The IntraLase method delivers outstanding results and it has been shown to improve outcomes for more patients.

What is Advanced CustomVue WaveFront?

Just like a fingerprint, your vision is unique to you. Advanced Cus-tomVue WaveFront corrects vision according to the individual im-perfections of your eyes. This means that each laser treatment is specific to you. This technology was originally developed for use in high powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Advanced CustomVue WaveFront uses an exceptionally advanced scanner called the WaveScan which generates an accurate map of how light passes through the eye. This map, and the measurements obtained are 25 times more accurate than measurements obtained during a routine sight test. It provides measurements of your pre-scription but also the natural imperfections (higher order aberra-tions) unique to each of your eyes. These aberrations have a significant impact on vision and have been linked to glare and halos, particularly at night-time. Benefits of this technology include better quality night vision than previously possible. In fact, since WaveFront technology allows us to correct individual imperfections, it has the potential to correct vision to an even better level than possible with glasses or contact lenses.

Your Laser Eye Surgery Journey

• On your first visit you will meet with your Laser Optometrist who will carry out detailed tests and scans on your eyes to assess your suit-ability for laser eye surgery

• Your Laser Optometrist will explain the procedures involved and an-swer any questions you may have

• The assessment will take approximately 1 hour and can be arranged for a time convenient to you

• If deemed suitable, a pre-operative consultation with your Surgeon can be booked

Initial Free Consultation

• Your Surgeon will carry out further eye examinations and give final approval for surgery

• Your Surgeon will explain your treatment in more technical detail, answer any additional questions you may have and talk you through what to expect on the day of treatment

• Afterwards, our clinic administration team will take you through the nec essary paperwork, payment details and confirm your treatment date and time

Consultation with your Surgeon

• You will be in the care of our surgery team, including your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Surgery Nurses, Laser Technician and Sup-port Staff

• We ask you to bring a friend or family member to accompany you• The laser treatment takes approximately 7 minutes per eye. The

laser is used for between 5 and 30 seconds• After treatment, you will relax while our Nurses explain our aftercare

programme• You will receive a post-operative information pack which includes

our 24 hour patient care helpline number, all necessary eye drops and a schedule of when to take them

The Day of your Laser Treatment

How is the laser treatment performed?

LASIK

LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) or IK for short, is the most frequently performed laser procedure in the world.The key benefits of the LASIK procedure are a rapid recovery time, usually within 48 hours and little or no post operative discomfort.

Anaesthetic drops are applied, which have the effect of numbing your eye.

A small flap is created on the surface of the cornea using blade free IntraLase technology or a precision surgical instrument called a microkeratome.

The laser is then applied to the underlying surface to reshape your cornea and correct your prescription.

Your Surgeon then places the flap back down and your eye begins to heal.

LASEK

LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) or EK for short, is a well established method of preparing the surface of the eye for laser eye surgery in patients for whom LASIK is not recommended. The decision as to which procedure is best for you will be made in consultation with your Laser Optometrist and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon.

Anaesthetic drops are applied, which have the effect of numbing your eye.

The surface layer of cells (Epithelium) of your eye is softened using an Ethanol solution and gently moved aside.

The laser is then applied to the underlying surface to reshape your cornea and correct your prescription.

A contact lens is put in place over your cornea for a period of five days to provide comfort and protection to the surface as it heals.• As part of our continued commitment to your care, we provide you

with a comprehensive aftercare programme for a year after your treatment

• This includes on average 6 post-op visits to the clinic• Each appoint ment should take no longer than twenty minutes• After you are discharged from our aftercare programme you should

require no further visits however our doors are always open and you are welcome to visit us any time for further check-ups or if you have any concerns or questions

Sightsavers works tirelessly to help cure people who have reversible eye conditions as well as prevent people from becoming needlessly blind.

On April 1st 2011, Optilase signed a partnership agreement with Sightsavers, whereby Optilase will contribute funds and expertise to Sightsavers for three years, specifically to help Sightsavers construct an eye department at Nampula Central Hospital in Nam-pula, Mozambique and to help train their local eye care experts and volunteers.

The aim of Sightsavers’ programme in Nampula is to strengthen the capacity of the Central Hospital so that it can deliver the full range of eye care services to treat the 1.3 million people currently affected by blindness and visual impairment in Nampula Province and to meet the eye care needs of the people living in the surrounding Province.

To do this, Sightsavers needs two things: funding to help build the eye department at the hospital and skills training for the various levels of ophthalmic personnel working within the project. The current eye care centre is severely overcrowded and unable to cope with the large numbers wishing to receive cataract surgery, other eye surgery and refractive services.
