According to information made available from the US Department of Labor, most health technologists would have at the minimum a bachelor degree from an establishment which has received accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The curriculum would be based mostly around disciplines such as microbiology, general biology, chemistry, and mathematics. The patient specimens that are tested may involve body tissue, spinal fluid, stool, sputum, urine, and blood. Each test would help to detect or disprove various abnormalities such as the presence of bacteria, abnormalities in blood, and the level of drugs in the body. To obtain certification to take up a career in this field, graduates are expected to complete a standardized national examination that provides a proficiency in all related areas. There are four certifying bodies, the most well-known being the Association of American medical Technologists. Data provided by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that as of May 2009, the average salary for professionals in this field ranged from $38,000 to $50,400. It is possible, with experience, to receive more than $70,000 per annum. The actual figure depends upon location and the type of employer. Private health facilities offer the best financial packages. The outlook for a medical tech career is extremely positive. It is expected that the number of openings will grow by at least fourteen per cent in the coming decade.
