The term holistic comes from “wholistic” meaning as a whole. In other words a holistic dentist treats the patient as a whole entity not just a mouth.

Mercury Fillings
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of the holistic dentist is that they do not use mercury fillings. Mercury is a known toxin and even the FDA says the small amount that leeches out is save. The Holistic Dentist feels no amount of toxins are safe for your body.

A scary fact is that when the amalgam (filling material containing mercury) is removed it is considered toxic waste and cannot be put in the garbage – it must go to a hazardous waste site.
Mercury is the second most toxic metal in the world.

Flouride
There has been some research done that shows a link between flouride and cancer as well as bone abnormalities and brittleness. Holistic Dentists recommend no use of Flouride – either in your toothpaste or drinking water (this includes pre-packaged drinks depending on the water source used)

Root Canals
Traditional dentists use root canals to save a tooth that has decayed and is dying or dead. Holistic Dentists believe that root canals are not safe as there is truly no way to make sure that there is no bacteria left in the canal and what is used is to attempt to remove it is toxic (formaldehyde).

Nichol
Nichol is another toxic metal used in crowns, braces, bridges and other appliances in patients’ mouths. It has been shown to cause suicidal thoughts, depression and maybe cancer as well. There are other metal choices –zirconimum and titanium or no metal at all like ceramic and resins.
