SCORE: 0-6 You may have low levels of toxicity, follow Nedley/UltraMind program.

7-9: You may have moderate toxicity (do program and self-care steps in UltraMind.)

10+ May have severe toxicity: Do all and see things to discuss w/functional medicine doctor

“Almost every mental disorder and neurodegenerative disease from depression to Alzheimers, from ADHD to autism, from Parkinson’s to bipolar disease can be improved by fixing problems with methylationand sulfation trains.” Dr. Hyman, The

UltraMind Solution

Hyman’s methylation quiz:

___I eat any kind of animal protein more than 5 times a week (i.e. any meat, eggs, milk products. Etc.)

___ I eat more than 1-2 foods a week with hydrogenated fats. (“0 grams” is misleading!)

___ I have servings of animal protein greater than 4-6 ounces (the size of the palm of your hand.)

___ I eat less than 1 cup of dark leafy green vegetables a day.

___ I eat fewer than 5-9 servings of veggies and fruit a day. (1/2 c= srvng)

___ I do not take a multi-vitamin.

___ I am over 65 years old.

Key: 0-8: Low level problem, follow UltraMind/Nedley program

9 and above: You may have a severe problem and may need medical care from a doctor well-versed in functional medicine &/or nutrition.

Hyman on Genes and depression What it does How to improve its function

MTHFR Controls methylation High doses of folic acid or methyl-folate

Apolipoprotein E4 Carries cholesterol & heavy metals Whole foods, low-glycemic-load diet; exercise

GSTM, GTSP Helps body detoxify & produce glutathione Adequate intake of B12,B6, folate, & amino acids

w/sulfur like NAC; eat 2 cups of cruciferous veggies

a day

CETP Transports cholesterol away from arteries Whole foods, low-glycemic-load diet; exercise

COMT Metabolizes neurotransmitters & hormones via

methylation

Adequate intake of B6, B12, and folate

SOD-2 Powerful intracellular antioxidant Take zinc, manganese & copper (multi-vitamin) &

plenty of phytonutrient antioxidants

Multi-gene disorders Interaction between many genes UMS pg. 223-4. Turn off bad genes through diet,

nutrition, 2 cups kale or cabbage

Page 17: Detoxification, brain chemistry and addictions

Toxic exposure + poor methylation + poor sulfation + genetic pre-dispositon (+ hormones (ie. strong sugar addict-

hormone connection) + ACEs, etc.) = Low functioning neurotransmitters

Predisposed to ADDICTIONS
