Advice on Overcoming Dental anxiety
Presents
Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He is also theowner of the very successful Langley Dental Practice in Middleton wherehe sees both NHS and private patients for a wide range of treatmentseach and every day.
He advised that one of the most common things he has to deal with dailyis dental anxiety. Tariq Drabu did mention that most dental anxiety casesare a result of an underlying problem such as a fear of needles, fear ofblood or even the sound of the drill, all things that can be dealt witheffectively to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
Tariq Drabu did come up with some ideas on how to manage dentalanxiety to ensure patients get the care they need and don't end upavoiding the dentist until they cannot take the pain anymore.
Tariq Drabu did mention that it is easier for a dentist to manage a patientsanxiety when they know they are afraid. He recommends and encourageshis patients to advise him of any fears they have so that he can help themremain calm, get the treatment they need and leave feeling confident.
This top dentist did advise that he ensures nervous patients are aware ofthe process that the treatment takes before he goes near their mouth.Knowing the process can help the patient prepare themselves mentally, reducing the risk of any nasty surprises.
Tariq Drabu also advised that many of his patients suffering from dental anxiety also find that learning some basic breathing techniques can help them manage their fears and keep themselves calm throughout the process. He also recommends that patients who are very nervous should consider some relaxing music, headphones and breathing to help them get through the appointment quickly and effectively.
Tariq Drabu did mention that in extreme cases sedation may be necessary. He is not talking about a general anaesthetic, but something that helps relax the patient and enables them to wake up once the procedure is finished with no memory of the experience. This is only offered once breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and therapy have not helped the patient overcome their fear.
