Procedure
An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted in your arm or hand.
A urinary catheter will be inserted to drain your urine.
A craniotomy generally requires a hospital stay of 3 to 7 days. You may also go to a rehabilitation unit for several days after your hospital stay. Procedures may vary depending on your condition and your doctor's practices
Your head will be shaved and the skin over the surgical site will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
The scalp will be pulled up and clipped to control bleeding while providing access to the brain. A medical drill may be used to make burr holes in the skull. A special saw may be used to carefully cut the bone.
Excess fluid will be allowed to flow out of the brain, if needed enabling the surgeon a better view of the brain structures and distinguish between abnormal and healthy tissueOnce the surgery is completed, the surgeon will sew the layers of tissue and skin together after re-placing the scalp bone.

RECOVERY and AFTERCAREIn general the length of hospital stay varies between 3-7 days and full recovery may take 6-12 weeks so have patience.
Get lots of sleep, your body will need it to recover quicker.
No lifting or straining..
Early ambulation is encouraged to decrease your risk of increased risk of blood clots and pneumonia. Start off with 1-2 blocks a day and increase as tolerated.
Make sure to attend post-operative visit for suture/staple removal and evaluation.
May climb stairs with assistance and not symptomatic by 2nd weekMay resume sexual activity if not symptomatic by 3rd week
By 4th week patient may return to work and start driving
