What is cancer? It is collection of related diseases where some of the body’s

cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues.

It can start anywhere in human body. Human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body

needs them. Cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place.

This process breaks down when cancer develops in body. Many cancers form solid tumors, except blood cancers like

leukaemia.

Common sites and symptoms

What is Cancer? Tumors of cancers are malignant i.e. they can spread into, or

invade, nearby tissues. As these tumors grow, some cancer cells can break off and

travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumors far from the original tumor.

Benign tumors do not spread into nearby tissues. It can be sometimes quite large.

When removed, they usually don’t grow back, whereas malignant tumors sometimes do.

Benign brain tumors can be life threatening.

Signs and symptoms When cancer begins, it invariably produces no symptoms. Signs and symptoms only appear as the mass continues to

grow or ulcerates. The findings that result depend on the type and location of

the cancer. Few symptoms are specific, with many of them also

Causes The great majority of cancers, some 90–95% of cases, are
