Bad breath is a major social deterrent and a curse that is sure to leave your odds of falling in love looking

rather sickly. We all suffer from bad breath at one or another stage during the day, usually in the mornings

as we wake up. It’s a fact of life given that our mouths are teeming with bacteria. However, some people seem

to pong all the time; so much so that their presence becomes synonymous with the sulfurous stench that

seems to follow them around. It’s these people that can be said to have halitosis: chronic bad breath.

With so much at stake, what can be done about bad breath short of popping a breath mint every 10 minutes or so? We

spoke to a gum disease specialist in Sun City to get to the bottom of bad breath, what causes it and what can be done to

permanently abolish it! In this four-part article series, we shall be exploring the dentist’s top tips for treating stinky

breath.

What Causes Bad Breath?

The first step on your journey to a nicer-smelling you is understanding what causes bad breath. Some of these factors

can be avoided or mitigated, while others will require attention from a dentist. Either way, there is always something to

be done to improve upon your presentation and to prevent yourself from becoming a constant assault on other people’s

noses.

“Bad breath is caused by oral bacteria. More specifically, bad breath is caused by the smelly, sulfur-packed wastes

produced by oral bacteria,” explains the gum disease treatment specialist. “So, the more bacteria you have in your

mouth, the worse your breath is going to be and the quicker it’s going to sour after brushing your teeth.”

This four-part article series provides a number of important tips for

maintaining good oral health and for eliminating the bacteria that cause

bad breath.

Bad Breath Buster # 1: Up Your Oral Hygiene Efforts

Thorough brushing with fluoride toothpaste two to three times per day, and flossing all your teeth in the evening before

you go to bed will help to eliminate the food debris and accumulations of plaque (which is essentially bacteria) that will

end up souring your breath. Consistently good oral hygiene is necessary because plaque, if left in place for too long,

eventually hardens to form tartar, which is a kind of dental cement formed by bacteria.

“The bacteria that make up these tartar structures on your teeth not only irritate your gums with their acidic wastes,

but they also continuously produce foul smells that will taint your breath,” explains the gum disease specialist. “So, it’s

no enough to suddenly changing your habits if you’ve allowed your dental hygiene to lapse for several years. Sure, it’ll

help and it’s never too late to change, but permanently abolishing bad breath will require that you see a dentist and oral

hygienist to have your teeth professionally cleaned and any signs of gum disease treated.”

Stay Tuned for Part 2
