Use 'a' with nouns starting with a consonant sound.
1.The word a called the indefinite article. You can use it with a singular countable noun to talk about any single person or thing.
For example, consider the following sentences:
A peripheral is a piece of computer hardware that is added to a host computer.
A hard drive can store as much information as thousands of flobby disks.

So, from the above examples we can conclude by the following point: You must use the indefinite article a with singular count nouns that are indefinite if the first sound is consonant.
Exception :

Because hour starts with a vowel sound we used an instead of a.
