• Hoi Mei Street (海味街 ) is located from Wing Lok Street to part of Des Voeux Road West.

History

• Sheung Wan was one of the earliest developed places in Hong Kong. Because of its long history, a lot of old buildings and traditional industries could be found there.

History

• Up to 50 years ago the area was dominated by salted fish stores, when workers would dry their products on rooftops, sell them on the ground floors and live on the floors in between. As the area became more residential, businesses expanded. Their sales pitch to include more high-end and auspicious options, including the Chinese banquet favourite --- abalone.

Relationship with Hong Kong’s economy

Hoi Mei Street sells luxury food items.

Reason: When people grow richer, they would spend more money on food and entertainment. That is why the sales of Hoi Mei Street increased reached the

peak at that time.

Effects on the Environment

• Some shark fin sold in the shops were from endangered species

• The removing of black moss (fat choy)causes barren land which is not suitable for cultivation.

Reasons for its success

• Most of the shops are located at a same place

• Attracts customers to go to a same place to shop for dried goods

• Motivates the shops to sell goods of better quality

Reflection

• The field trip was held on 2nd & 4th December. Before we go, all the team members discussed and compromised the distribution of work. We also did a research on the data and background of Des Voeux Road West.

• Street-side market stalls can be seen all along the road. In this street, a lot of shops sell dried seafood and tonic food.
