The National Marine Park of Alonnisos

Northern Sporades was the first designated Marine

Park in the country and is currently the largest

marine protected area in Europe.

It provides opportunities for recreational,

instructional and scientific activities and, in addition,

has a deeper cultural and educational significance.

Through observation of the richness of a thriving

ecosystem, the visitor experiences the harmony of

nature, which is today under pressure.

Park's role The all increasing human interventions of this century have destabilized the equilibrium of the planet to a dangerous degree. Therefore, since we are aware of the destruction we are causing, it is up to us to act, to control, reduce it and adopt a friendlier attitude.

Fauna The geographic isolation of the area, its morphology,

the limited degree of human interference and the excellent condition of the natural environment make the land and sea areas of the Marine Park an ideal habitat for many threatened species of animals. The area of Park is an important habitat for many species of fish (about 300), birds (up to 80 species), reptiles and also mammals. The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the most characteristic rare species to be found.

Monachus MonachusThe Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus over time and due to the various pressures posed on the animal and its habitat has become extinct in more than 10 countries during the last 20 years.

It is estimated that only

400-500 individuals

survive today. Many

scientists believe that

Greece holds at least 2/3

of the total remaining

monk seal population.
