Understand your bills

Basic:Read your bill in detail – notice what you are actually paying forHow much are you paying for electricity (and natural gas)? What is the average price per kWh (or MJ)?

Advanced:What kind of tariff are you on?Do you have network demand charges? If so, how much do those charges contribute to the overall bill?

Pro:Record your energy consumption as soon as you get the bill

total kWh (MJ)split into peak/shoulder/off peakkVA$ spend

Where does your energy go?

Basic:If you have heating or cooling it is probably where most of the energy goesMost of the other energy goes to lighting and equipment

Advanced:Observe your space and note what consumes energyDoes this piece of equipment need to be on?Is the equipment energy efficient (energy star rating)?Could the equipment be run at a time when the tariff is cheaper?

Pro:Engage an energy auditorList all your energy consuming equipment, their Wattage, the time it is run for and when it is run. Add everything up – is the total roughly your annual energy consumption?

Pro:Exchange your old air conditioning unit for a new and efficient one
