Home. Technology has become a necessity in a Gen Y’s daily life, to the point it may sometimes be excessive. As Singapore progresses with modern amenities, Gen Y craves for more carbon-intensive comforts such as air-conditioning and multiple entertainment gadgets. Question: Are we aware of the costs of our craving for a carbon intensive lifestyle?

Figure 2. Predicament. Economic disparities are prevalent, not just in Singapore, but in any established country. Different groups of Gen Ys are born into families with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Yet, both groups are equally vulnerable to climate change impacts. The only difference? Their capacity to change the environment to suite their needs. Question: Are we aware of the different predicaments of people of differing socio-economic groups when it comes to dealing with climate change?

Progress. Realizing the importance of a good transportation infrastructure to increase productivity, the Singapore government built the Mass Rapid Transit railway system. Not only has it become one of the hallmarks of Singapore's success, it has also become a huge necessity for Gen Y. The MRT was so successful that it has expanded its initial North-South line, to include the North-East line, and the recent Downtown line. Yet, the controversies between efficiency, modern transport as a necessity, and the recent green movement, rages on. It has given birth to a younger generation with conflicting, double-standard views, seen especially in the recent debate of the Cross Island Line. Question: Is public transport necessary to social stability at the expense of diminishing greenery?

Recreation. As a ‘Global City’ that valorizes cosmopolitanism, many Singaporeans, especially the youths who have been molded in this globalized world, are more inclined to take on an international outlook. For those with financial capacity, travelling the world becomes a popular choice of leisure; a carbon intensive activity nonetheless. On the other hand, those without the financial capacity are still capable of immersing themselves in equally carbon intensive technologies for entertainment. Question: How has the perspective of entertainment, which is molding towards a carbon intensive one, changed in Gen Y?

Separation. Climate change will remain as a pertinent topic for decades to come, and Gen Y will (whether we like it or not) have to deal with it. Needless to say, laid before us are multiple paths, each leading towards different ways to dealing with climate change, each bearing their own perspectives on the issue. Question: What new insights and improvements could Gen Ys offer to tackle climate change? Can these different paths converge somewhere?
