1. Karosta Prison Hostel, Latvia

If it looks more like a prison than a hotel, that’s because it is. Or at least it used to be.

Used during the 20th Century as a Nazi and Soviet military prison, the building has now been converted into a prison themed hostel.

Thousands of prisoners allegedly died on the site and staff tell stories about lightbulbs that unscrew from their sockets, doors that open by themselves and the ghost of a woman who hanged herself that wanders the corridors.

2. Hotel Burchianti, Italy

Hotel Burchianti in Florence, Italy is claimed to be home to a number of ghosts.

Over the years guests have seen children skipping down the halls, a woman knitting in a chair and a ghostly maid cleaning in the early hours.

The ghost of a sailor is said to haunt room number eight of the Russell Hotel in Sydney.

With tales of unexplained footsteps during the night, guests who want to learn more about the hotel’s haunted past are offered ghost tours by the hotel staff.

4. Dragsholm Slot, Denmark

This 12th Century hotel in Denmark is said to be haunted by the ghost of two women and the Earl of Bothwell.

One woman was the daughter of a castle owner, while the other is rumoured to be a former maid.

The Earl of Bothwell died in the castle cellars while being held as a prisoner there in 1578.

5. Hollywood Roosevelt, US

The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles is said to be haunted by a very famous ghost, that of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe.

Marily was a resident of the hotel, which hosted the first academy awards in 1929 and guests have reported seeing a blonde woman in the long mirror in Monroe’s former suite.

Additionally, the ghost of actor Montgomery Clift has been heard playing his trombone in room 928.

6. Hotel Chelsea, USA

This hotel is said to be home to 3 famous ghosts; welsh poet Dylan Thomas, American novelist Thomas Wolfe and former Sex Pistol Sid Vicious.

The tale of Sid Vicious is particularly gruesome as he is said to have stabbed his girlfriend in room 100 and now lingers forever in the hotel’s east elevator.

7. Bourbon Orleans, US

The Bourbon Orleans hotel was once a convent and orphanage as is said to be the home for a number of ghosts.

They include a young girl who is seen rolling a ball and chasing it downthe sixth floor corridors, a ghostly dancer in the ballroom and a soldierwho inhabits the third and sixth floors.

8. Anchorage Hotel, Alaska US

Police Officer John J “Black Jack” Sturgus was discovered shot in the back with a bullet from his own gun in the Anchorage Hotel.

He is now rumoured to return every year seeking justice for the unsolved crime.

9. Heathman Hotel, Portland,Oregon US

Guests in the Heathman hotel have reported lots of paranormal activity, including strange drops in temperature and unexplained noises.

Some guests have also claimed to have seen a hazy face watching them in the shadows and have reported objects which have moved unexpectedly and towels soiled with no explanation.

10. The Jekyll Island Club, US

The Jekyll Island Club in Georgia was home to many wealthy Americans, one of which was banker JP Morgan.

Morgan was well known in the hotel for smoking his favourite cigar every morning at 5am in the annex and to this day guests report smelling cigar smoke at the same time each day.

11. The Stanley Hotel, US

Since opening in 1907 The Stanley Hotel in Colorado has been a hotbed of paranormal activity.

One of the most famous stories is of former housekeeper Elisabeth Wilson, who died at the hotel in 1911 and is said to regularly return to room 217 and unpack and store away guest’s belongings.

Other guests have reported hearing the sound of children running andgiggling in the halls, while the ghosts of the hotels original owners, Mr and Mrs Stanley are said to regularly pass through the hotel’s lobby.

Some residents claim to have heard Mrs Stanley playing the piano in the music room.

12. Brown Palace Hotel & Spa, US

A ghostly railroad conductor and a spectral string quartet are said to haunt the Brown Palace Hotel & Spa in Colorado.

The quartet are said to have reassured the hotel’s bellman when he spotted them, telling him ‘we live here’.

13. Hawthorne Hotel, US

Several high profile guests have been resident at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, Massachsetts over the years, including former US president George Bush and his wife Barbara.

It is said that the ghost of a woman roams the haul outside Room 612 and residents have reported paranormal activity including missing keys and water taps and lights turning on by themselves.

The Carolina Inn’s resident ghost is former guest Dr Jacocks, who has been sighted wearing a long blue coat and wandering the halls.

Guests have also reported hearing ghostly footsteps in empty rooms.

15. Grand Hyatt Hotel, Taiwan

This luxurious hotel in Taipei was built over a former wartime political prison and is said to be haunted by the ghosts of several executed inmates.

Sacred scrolls and a Chinese sutra have been placed in the hotel’s lobby to try and ward off the many wandering spirits.

Former employee Sam Macauley died at the hotel in 1967, following the annnouncement of his retirement.

He is now said to wander the ninth floor.

It is also said that the ghost of a young bride who died on her wedding day haunts the marble stairwell where she tumbled to her untimely death.

Another hotel with lots of ghosts, London’s Langham hotel has been host to a number of literary greats including Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The most common sighting is of a man in Victorian evening wear, who only appears during the month of October in Room 333.

Other reports include the figure of a military man standing by the window on the fourth floor, thought to be the ghost of a former German prince who committed suicide by jumping out the window.

This hotel in California is said to be haunted by the ghost of Kate Morgan, who was found dead days after she checked in.

Lady Isobella, who was a resident of the castle in 1625 is said to have been locked alone in a room by Lord Shaw after giving birth to their son.

Attempting to escape, she fell from a window and died and is now saidto wander the castle, desperately searching for the son who was taken for her.
