Television idents

•Television indents are used between almost all TV programmes •used to try and create and identity for the channel.•Re branding to keep channel up to date•Used when the narrator is speaking•They are also used sometimes to reflect seasonal events

Identifying the channelChannel 4 has a mission statement/remit a lot like other channels which is a promise the channel says their

going to make.Channel 4’s remit is……..(a) demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes(b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society(c) makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include

programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and(d) exhibits a distinctive character.”

Channel 4’s remits should reflect on their TV indents for example they should show creativity and culturally diverse society. For example some of there idents are filmed in different locations for example the city and a council estate.

Tv schedules

This shows channel 4 TV schedule for Wednesday 13th November between 7-10 pm. This lets viewers know what's being shown in the day and at what times. This shows what type of programmes are shown at this type of time.

Cbeebies use their idents to show what time of the day it is and what shows are expected for that time of the day.

Segmentation of the scheduling -for non-commercial channels

Television channels such as BBC3 don’t have adverts as they are non commercial channel. Instead they have TV idents which will be related to the channel and shown between TV shows. They will also be used whenthe narrator is speaking saying what show is coming next.

With bbc 1 It also expresses what show could be happening next for example when strictly come dancing is in a sparkly disco ball ident will be used just before it. This can let viewers know what show is coming up next and have a link towards it.

BBC bring their values across in their idents. For example I think I they show creativity in their idents and they come across with a honest feel to the channel

Creating corporate identity merchandiseCompanies want their company's to have as much exposure as possible so that they will get company awareness.

BBC have their own shop that sells products to related shows and with the bbc brand Identity on it.

Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty

Also if channels stick to their mission statement there shouldn’t be a reason why customersaren't loyal

Channel 4 uses idents of moving buildings/objects to form in to the channel 4 shape, this isnow recognisable and symbolic to the public and they have created a brand with it.

Branding of particular contentChannels will you certain indents to show particular shows e.g sports and news. This is a way of letting customer knows what to expect from the programme

Creating the right tone and appealing to the target audience

TV channels will make idents to fit in with their target audience. Most channels all havedifferent target audiences with different shows so their idents will be different.

For example BBC 2 will have More cultural idents as they showCultural programmes e.g. nature Shows.

Compared to BBC 1 which hasMore entertainment programmes,This comes across in their idents

A marketing opportunityA marketing opportunity is about getting a channels logo across as possible to createas much brand awareness for that channel. For example channels may show their logosAt the end of programmes or on the schedule before programmes.

Packaging and Re-packaging a series of programmes or event

(e.g. a season of programmes, sports, national event)

Channels will rebrand and re package TV idents to fit in with national events. For exampleIdents will change for Christmas and also big national events like the Olympics. This can Show they support a national event that is happening
