The fourth son, Private First Class James Ryan, is a paratrooper and is missing in action somewhere in Normandy. Marshall, after reading Abraham Lincoln's Bixby letter, orders that Ryan be found and sent home immediately. 11. 11 Real-life similarities The Niland brothers were four American brothers of German descent from Tonawanda, New York, serving in the military during World War II. 12. 12 Of the four, two survived the war, but for a time it was believed that only one, Frederick "Fritz" Niland, had survived. After the reported deaths of his three brothers, Fritz was sent back to the United States and later he learned that his brother Edward was actually captive in a Japanese POW camp in Burma. 13. 13 Review The film was accurate as far as dates and events went. There was a lot of interesting information scattered throughout the film that helped give an understanding of the weapons being used during this time period. 14. 14 Review cont'd. In Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," thousands of terrified and seasick men, most of them new to combat, are thrown into the face of withering German fire. The landing on Omaha Beach was not about saving Pvt. Ryan. It was about saving your skin. 15. 15 Review cont'd. "Saving Private Ryan" says things about war that are as complex and difficult as any essayist could possibly express, and does it with broad, strong images, with violence, with profanity, with action, with camaraderie. 16. 16 Review cont'd. It is possible to express even the most thoughtful ideas in the simplest words and actions, and that's what Spielberg does. The film is doubly effective, because he communicates his ideas in feelings, not words. 17. 17 AM I A GOOD MAN? At the end of the film, old Ryan asked his wifeAm I a good man?Am I worthy of these peoples sacrifice? 18. 18 Inspirations Cpt. John H. Miller along with his team is the source of inspiration. Clearly knowing the fact that going behind the enemy lines could cost them their life, but still Captain followed the orders issued to him with great commitment, honesty and valor. 19. 19 Reasons for Inspiration Patriotism, Heroism Ryan was a true a patriotic soldier filled with heroic essence for his country. He refused to go back when Capt Miller informed him about chiefs orders. Sacrifice for others This is a touching story about men who gave their lives for a mission. We can learn so much about sacrificing our own lives for the sake of others from this movie. Feelings for somebody USA chief of staff had sympathetic feelings for Mrs Ryan, so he sent out a mission despite of the fact that the area was known to be very dangerous and risky. 20. 20 Reasons for Inspiration Commitment towards your target Once we are assigned a target, we must be committed to it no matter how much hardships we have to bear. Captain Miller and his team remained committed to his task with honesty and bravery even after losing two lives and Ryan was finally back to his home. On the other hand, Ryan was committed to his position in the battlefield and refused to leave it when Cpt. Miller informed him about Chiefs orders. 21. 21 Achievement Genre: Action Drama History 1998, Steven Spielberg Won 5 Oscars Mixture of history(loosely based) and fiction Portrays WWII as it really was: very realistic portrayal of war About brotherhood, courage, sacrifice and leadership 22. 22 Conclusion June 6, 1944. Military forces converge on the beaches of Normandy for one of the most decisive battles of World War II. America would call it a victory. History would call it D-Day. Washington has sent Miller on a personal mission to save one life. One paratrooper missing in action. It is a test of their honor and their duty. Their sole obsession - and their last hope for redemption. In a war of devastating proportions, saving one life could make all the difference in the world. 23. 23 Thank you !!
