The ITV1 name was only used in England, Wales, Southern Scotland and Isle of Man until Channel Television adopted the name in January 2006, bringing it to the Channel Islands. It aims to attract the widest possible audience by offering a range of high quality programmes that are inclusive in their appeal, particularly at peak viewingtimes.

ITV1’s success relies on its ability to appeal to the widest possible range of tastes and interests, ages and cultures, and programme diversity is also a statutory requirement in new broadcasting legislation expected to be enacted during 2003. The ITV1 schedule will therefore include the following programme genres in 2003-4: drama, entertainment, national and international news, current affairs, arts, religious and ethical programmes, sport, adult, social action and feature films.
